Use the data to construct a frequency distribution.
1) A car insurance company conducted a survey to find out how many car accidents people had been involved in. They selected a sample of 32 adults between the ages of 30 and 70 and asked each person how many accidents they had been involved in the past ten years. The following data were obtained.

Construct a frequency distribution, letting each class have a width of one.

Frequency distribution for the number of accidents

Number of accidents Tally Frequency Relative Frequency
0 |||| |||| 1 11 11/32 = 0.34375
1 |||| |||| 10 10/32 = 0.3125
2 |||| 5 5/32 = 0.15625
3 ||| 3 3/32 = 0.09375
4 || 2 2/32 = 0.0625
5 | 1 1/32 = 0.03125
Sum 32 1

Construct a stem and leaf display for the given data.
2) Here are the final scores for the last 16 games played by the local basketball team.

Stem and Leaf plot for Final Score

Stem unit = 10
Leaf unit = 1

Stem Leaf
4   5
5   3 4 7 9
6   5 5 7 7
7   4 5 5 9
8   6 7 7

Construct a histogram of the given frequency distribution.
3) The frequency distribution indicates the number of speeding tickets for each person in a group of 1140 drivers.

Histogram of the number of speeding tickets for each person

Use the circle graph to solve the problem.
4) The circle graph below gives the number of residents in the residence halls at the state university.

Write the ratio as a fraction in the lowest terms of the number of residents at Adams to the number of students at Dodge.

Let X denote the ratio of the number of residents at Adams to the number of students at Dodge. Therefore,

X =

Solve the problem.
5) If an investor purchased 50 shares of Pearson Education stock at $85 per share, 90 shares at $105 per share, 120 shares at $110 per share, and another 75 shares at $130 per share. What is the mean cost per share?

The mean cost per share is

Mean =

Find the median of the set of data.
6) 11, 28, 38, 57, 60, 62, 80

Median =   th value =   th value = 4th value = 57

Find the mode or modes for the set of numbers.
7) 86, 57, 32, 57, 29, 86

Modes = 57 and 86

Rank the data from lowest to highest and determine the requested quartile.
8) The following scores on the midterm exam in a math class were recorded.

Rearranging data in ascending order (lowest to highest)

59 60 61 62 63 66 69 71 72 74
76 77 78 80 81 81 82 83 83 84
86 88 89 91 93 94 95 96 97 98

Find the 3rd quartile, Q3.

Q3 =  th value =  th value = 23.25th value

Q3 =

Solve the problem.
9) Find the range and the standard deviation of the following voltages (in volts) of a sample of watch batteries: 1.212, 1.199, 1.201, 1.202, 1.199, 1.198.

Range = Maximum – Minimum = 1.212 – 1.198 = 0.014

Mean,
Sample standard deviation,

1.212 0.010167 0.000103
1.199 -0.002833 0.000008
1.201 -0.000833 0.000001
1.202 0.000167 0.000000
1.199 -0.002833 0.000008
1.198 -0.003833 0.000015
Sum 7.211 0.000000 0.000135

Solve the problem.
10) If a baseball player has a batting average of 0.420, what is the probability that the player will get at least 2 hits in the next four times at bat?

This is an example of Binomial Distribution.

P(x ≥ 2) = P(2) + P(3) + P(4) ≈ 0.3560 + 0.1719 + 0.0311 ≈ 0.5590

Alternately,

 P(x ≥ 2) = 1 – P(x < 2) = 1 – P(0) – P(1) ≈ 1 – 0.1132 – 0.3278 ≈ 1 – 0.4410 ≈ 0.5590 Read More
