Extract of sample "The Interpretation of Advertisements"

Though it lacks text and instead of a narrative, as O'Barr stated "music, motion, color, and other features are sometimes used in an attempt to evoke attitudes and feelings in consumers rather than to tell specific stories" (p. 10); in this instance, the ad uses motion and proximity of the people to evoke a sense of togetherness and a party-like atmosphere as they all appear to be friendly with each other or maybe even a family. The ad is effective in demonstrating the interactive nature of the Nintendo Wii Console.

It challenges the dominant ideas of most consumers by showing an alternative depiction of what videogames represent (O'Barr). Instead of the traditional expectation of what playing videogames involve as a typical depiction would be one or two people on a couch focusing intently with minimal body movement. Instead, the ad is a large group of people all enjoying themselves and actively moving around. Also, the ad shows attitudes and feelings that are universal as the people showed are Asian and range from well-to-do businessman to a casually dressed girl in jeans.

However, what is most clear is the fun they are having and race, ethnicity, or social status are an afterthought because wanting to have fun is universal. This ad is a clear departure from what traditional videogames represented by showing men and women of perhaps different status collectively having a good time and participating as a group in the game. http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc27/GCNSean/Misc/Vii01.jpgConclusionIn conclusion, emotions can be expressed through advertisements if the producer instills them correctly in the actions and faces of the models.

This Nintendo Wii ad shows enthusiasm, excitement, fun, and enjoyment in the faces and actions of the models. It also subtly represents a new movement sparked by Nintendo for videogames to be more engaging, interactive, and inclusive of all people. It shows how Nintendo can exclusively offer a person this level of enjoyment by representing the company through what is becoming a cultural icon its game controller (O'Barr). The emotional response this ad has is clear, joy and excitement, making it a very effective representation of the Nintendo Wii Brand.
