I chose to major in the English Language because I had a clear vision of the advantages of learning English. I became aware of the difficulties in learning the language, surmounted these difficulties with the guidance of my teachers, and decided to use my experience to help my people to learn and use the language for their material, cultural and spiritual progress. Some of my teachers were native speakers of English. There were advantages in learning their language from them, but I think some of my people may find it easier to be taught by one of their own. It was, therefore, natural, that I should apply for the post of English Language teacher in my country. By the grace of God, the authorities recognized my qualifications, my skills, and my ambition and appointed me to the post. Again, by the grace of God, they acknowledged my merits by promoting me very soon to the position of Head of the General Studies Department.

Even as I was trying to master the art of teaching a foreign language to my countrymen, in my early days of teaching, I knew that I needed to learn more about the language and the latest methods of teaching. When I became Head of the General Studies Department, I realized that I should wait no longer. I discussed this with the Director of the Institute, and he warmly supported my views and wishes. He also offered me a scholarship to take up my desired course of study anywhere in the world.

I did not doubt that a student of the English language should undertake his studies in the home of the English language—Great Britain—if such an option were available. I enjoyed and gained vastly from the Teacher Training course at Hastings. I consulted with senior professors and did some research of my own and decided that I should apply to the University of Manchester for admission to the MA course in Educational Technology and TESOL. The Director of the Institute endorsed this decision and encouraged me to lose no time in applying for admission to the course.

This course will help me to achieve three things. One, because I will be taking the course in Britain, from British teachers and in the company of British and cosmopolitan fellow learners, my fellow learners' use of the English language will improve immensely. Moreover, I will gain experience in the theory and practical application of the principles of TESOL, which will be of enormous benefit to me in my role as a teacher of the English language to students in my country. Last, but not least, as the Head of a Department of Studies, I hope to acquire in my repertory some of the latest tools developed by experts in educational technology.

All this will equip me to serve my country as a teacher and administrator, in the short run. It may also enable me to advance further, and to use the knowledge and the international exposure I hope to gain, to help formulate the educational policies of my country and thus, attain the status of a decision-maker in education at the national level.
