Anytime a decision is made that is based on a person's age there is the potential for age discrimination to exist and it may be illegal.There are numerous reasons that people commit age discrimination, and as an employer they often feel like it is an innocent right that they have. An employer may want someone younger to greet their customers in an effort to give their company a more youthful image. A manager may wish to hire a younger man in the belief that they will be better able to understand the new technology than the older gentleman. The sales manager hires the younger candidate because she feels that the older lady just won't be able to keep up with the demands of the schedule. However, studies conducted with Human Resource managers have consistently proven that these are myths. The public trusts the experience that comes with age, the technology gap does not exist, and there is no loss of productivity as people age (Grossman). No matter what reason is given for age discrimination, it is usually based on a myth or misconception.The tragedy of age discrimination is that it seems to be a growing trend in the American workplace.
