This would demand a detailed introspection into the return on the bank's asset-based on their newly accumulated capital base. Further, the innovative ways of managing their cost is another aspect that needs to be investigated. The extend of impact from the tremendous change sweeping across the globe in the banking sector also required to be understood from the new generation banks in Nigeria. The important interventions like the incorporation of technology in banking in the form of Automated Teller Machines, online or internet facilities, better personal banking facilities are the few steps usually adopted in this direction.

The retail banking segment, which was not given a high priority in their earlier operations has become one of the core segments of their activities. Thus the new set of responsibilities and opportunities that have been thrust on the banks hence, need a thorough introspection to make valid conclusions on their operational efficiency. A reliable model of banking operations for banks in Nigeria needs to emerge considering the long-term development plans for the country. The country blessed with immense resources needs strong financial and banking support to meet the national objectives in development.

The absence of such strong financial systems was the prime reason that prevented Nigeria from becoming a vibrant economy in the African sub-continent. In addition to the support to the development objectives, the retail personal banking section was also unattended in the past. This was primarily due to the categorization of banks and feeble administration which created strong suspicion on the overall stability of banking operations in Nigeria. Thus the basis of all commercial operations is the profitability, and the long-term viability of banks depends on the extend of steps initiated to ensure this vital component.

Hence the research undertaken would be able to bring out a clear comparison on the level of banking operation in the pre and post-consolidation period. Thus this exercise is significant as it would help to assess the impact of the strategies chosen and finally identify the grey areas that need more attention to meet the earlier stated objectives. Thus the study is a pioneering initiative towards understanding the banking operations from the commercial viability and evaluating the need for various interventions in their future course of action.

Thus the results would also help to frame corrective measures in making their operations stable on a long-term basis. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMThe problem formulated in this research aims to explore the operations being followed by the banking sector in the post-consolidation phase. The operations being analyzed include the retail personal banking and development-related interventions initiated for the progress of the nation. The incorporation of technological developments in banking operations is a clear benchmark for their proactive role in commercial activities.

Thus the problem presented here is an investigation into the profitability factor among the banks currently operating in Nigeria. Further, it is also expected to bring out the customer perceptions and their views on improving the banking systems, in line with global level changes.
