Jesus is trying to notify that we have to give up all our relations for he is higher above all our family relations and even our life. In verse 27 Luke14 when it says, "he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple."(Luke) From this Jesus means that one should be prepared to die with him and should not hide from sacrificing. Similarly in Luke14: 28-30 it says "For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it Or else, when he has laid a basis and is not able to finish, all who watch it begin to mock him, saying, this man initiated to construct and was not able to finish." (Luke) It means that a person who is willing to be amongst the disciples of Jesus Christ must know first about the charge and the dilemma he is going to face.

It is a type of check on the spirituality of a person that how sincerely he is keen to be a disciple.
