1. I agree. I think that the way this book sets out strategies and ways to observe the other side makes it worth keeping around. I think I will be going back to it very often to make sure that I understand the frames and especially the tactics used by others.

2. I completely agree. It is so important to make that connection and establish a level of trust with the other person. I don't think that you can effectively influence someone else if they don't have at least a little trust in you. Their defences have to come down and that will only happen if you can reach out to them and connect.

3. This is true. It doesn't take a lot of education to eat the fish, but learning to catch the fish can be a process. As you become more and more practised in your negotiation techniques, the better you are and the more you can contribute to those who are learning then.

4. Yes, this is true...as long as the compliments are taken as genuine. A false compliment or flattery for the sake of influence can cause suspicion and close off the person. Even sincere compliments have to be given with discretion because if the person thinks that you are saying nice things just to get them to do something, they will not be cooperative.

5. I don't know...sometimes trust can be so violated that it isn't able to be repaired. I think that's why win-win is always best because each side is looking out for the other's interests.

6. Yes, I think the book does cite a study that says that compliments, even false ones, are helpful. What I am saying is that we should be truthful and I know that if I was in a negotiation and thought the other side was complimenting me just to try and get my defences down, I would become very uncooperative. I hope that I am never in that position to have to flatter to accomplish my negotiation goals.
