Essays/Problems: (251981 After completing my college degree, Ihope to find employment as a researcher at a security company. This will allow me to use the skills I have learned in college and also to apply those skills in the vital work of assuring security and safety to those needing such services. While I hope to make a career of this work, I realize that most professional employees change jobs several times during their careers, so that it might be unrealistic to plan on remaining with my first employer for my entire career. However, the important thing is to be loyal to my employer for as long as I am there, Because that is what is expected of an employee and is what the employer deserves. If I am happy in my job and am treated well, I would like to remain at the company for most or all of my career. Some indicators of being treated well would be regular pay and benefit increases, increased job responsibilities, and full and fair consideration for promotions. After several years with that employer, I should be able to judge if this is the firm with which I would want to remain, or if I should begin searching for a new employer. Should I decide to leave this first company, it would be important to give adequate notice and fulfill all responsibilities including those of a departing employee. In order to prepare myself for a long-term career over the next thirty to forty years, I plan on keeping up with developments in my field through several forms of further education. Changes in information technology and in the field of security have become faster and faster, so that I would have to keep up in order to avoid my skills becoming obsolete. Further college education would be available both in person and on line, and there are continuous training seminars and similar opportunities which I would pursue. 2 Retirement will depend on my earnings during my working career, the retirement benefits available through my employment, and my ability and willingness to save and invest for that retirement. There is always a trade-off between present enjoyment of one's income and saving for the future. I would hope to be able to make the maximum contributions from my income to a sound private retirement plan, but it will also be important for me to choose an employer offering a good retirement program. Some employers have been cutting back on their own retirement contributions, so I would look at the history of any employer whom I am considering to see if such cutbacks have occurred or are likely now. I would like to retire around the age of sixty if possible, to have some years to enjoy the benefits of my advance planning and the savings and investments I have accumulated. 2. According to Economics by McConnell and Brue, 16th Edition, McGraw Hill Irwin, Chapter 8, the major types of unemployment are frictional, seasonal, cyclical, and structural. Frictional unemployment is normal in any free society, as it comes from people exercising their right to change jobs so as to better themselves. Frictional unemployment also covers people who are temporarily out of work due to moving to a new location, experiencing some kind of personal or family problem, and so on. Seasonal unemployment occurs in jobs such as construction which cannot be done during the entire year. Often, the wages paid in such jobs are above the usual level in order to compensate for the period of unemployment. Other seasonal types of jobs might be lifeguard at a beach or instructor at a ski resort, and similar situations. 3 Frictional and seasonal unemployment may be considered fairly normal in any market Economy. Far more serious are the other two types of unemployment. Cyclical unemployment is the result of a downturn in the business cycle, such as the present recession. This is the major type of unemployment which is growing in the United States today, and is the result of an economic downturn affecting most of the business sector. The traditional remedies for such cyclical unemployment involve tax cuts and similar measures such as the recent tax rebate called a stimulus package, or increases in government spending. However, the immense size of the present Federal budget deficit makes either policy rather difficult to implement, so the solution remains unclear. Structural unemployment comes about from changes in technology and the structure of our business and economic system, and is the most serious form for the long run period. Workers must be retrained to new occupations and jobs, and programs must be set up to encourage businesses to hire more workers. There is an immense amount of useful work needed by America, ranging from saving and improving the environment to repair and rebuilding of our aging infrastructure of roads, bridges, and public facilities. The government should encourage these types of jobs, but again the present large deficit makes that encouragement difficult until some other spending can be at least reduced. Research: 3. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov/eps/ and www.bls.gov/ces/) "nonfarm payroll employment fell by 240,000 in October, and the unemployment rate rose from 6.1 to 6.5%.....October's drop in payroll employment followed declines of 4 3. Continued: 127,000 in August and 284,000 in September, as revised. Employment has fallen by 1.2 million in the first ten months of 2008; over half of the decrease has occurred in the past three months." Total nonfarm payroll employment was about 137 million for the month of October, 2008. According to BLS Table A-13, 79,601,000 people were not in the labor force as of that same month (same prior citation.) As to duration of unemployment, the seasonally-adjusted median duration rose from 8.7 weeks a year to 10.2 weeks in October, 2008, indicating that our economic situation is worsening rather than improving, which is confirmed by many other measures of the economy. (Table A-9, www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t09.) Extra Credit: According to Migration Information Source (www.migrationinformation.org/usfocus) there were 37, 547,789 foreign born people in the United States as of the U.S. Census Bureau's 2006 American Community Survey, which is about 12.5% of our population. Mexico-born immigrants represent over thirty percent of total foreign born people, by far the largest immigrant group in the U.S. The other leading sources of immigrants are the Philippines, China (excluding Taiwan), India, Vietnam, El Salvador, Korea, Cuba, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Combined, these countries made up 58.4% of all foreign-born people residing in the United States in 2006. (www.migrationinformation.org/usfocus/display.cfmID=649) Read More
