For the financial year of 2008, the share prices of Rio Tinto exhibited a strong performance except during the fourth quarter. The earnings of the last year were as per the targets set by the board inspite of the drop in the commodity prices. A graph representing the relative performance of Rio Tinto's with other mining companies in context to the HSBC Global Mining Index is shown below, (Rio Tinto n.d, Online).
The Financial performance of Rio Tinto was evaluated adjacent to the fundamental income objective decided by the Group committee. The potential impact of fluctuations in exchange rates and commodity prices is beyond the control of the committee. The Committee retains discretion to consider underlying business performance in deciding STIP awards. The committee did not exercise its discretion to offset the effect of the sharp decline in performance late in the fourth quarter.
The management of the company makes regular half yearly dividend payments to shareholders as per the profits gained in the financial year, the working capital levels and the amounts of debts, (Australian Stock Exchange, n.d, online). Usually, as per the company standards, 60 to 70 % of the total year's profit value after tax deduction is distributed as dividends, while the remaining amount is used for development purposes. The board has issued statements of a concluding bonus of 47.5 cents per share, franked at 72.0% (33.7 cents per share franked). The final dividend for the financial year of 2007 was at 32.65 cents per share, franked at 29.2% (9.5 cents per share). The company paid these dividends to the shareholders in the month of October 2008. Final dividends of 46.29 pence per share and of 101.48 Australian cents per share will be paid on 8 April 2009. The 2008 interim and final dividends were determined at 68.0 US cents and at 68.0 US cents per share respectively and the applicable translation rates were US$1.8759 and US$1.46885 to the pound sterling and US$0.8791 and US$0.6701 to the Australian dollar. A final dividend of 272 US cents per Rio Tinto plc ADR (each representing four shares) will be paid by JPMorgan Chase Bank NA to ADR holders on 9 April 2009. The table shown below reqpresnts the shareholder returns for the period 2004 - 2008(Rio Tinto n.d, Online).
