Field Project in a School I am writing this project report to recount the daily activities in the room of the primary s ly: reading,spelling or language, writing, mathematics, and science. I specifically described in this document the sets of learning sessions given daily to our students and how these benefit them. The methods encouraged them to understand the subject matter through research, various types of tests and projects, watching various shows/plays and relating their experiences through writing and hands-on experience. The following activities were covered during the sessions for each subject: 1. To improve the spelling and vocabulary skills of the students, I applied effective and entertaining method that was helpful in learning new words but in a fun way. Some specific activities for this particular subject were: a) New York state practice test to help me or fellow teachers determine the areas which the children need to improve on b) spelling words that had the "oi" eg. soil, noise, and moist c) spelling word test also proved to be effective where children who spelled the words wrong will be asked to write the words five (5) times d) spelling bee contests of the site words 2. For the Vocabulary building, we did informative and entertaining activities: a) on the 100th day celebration of the school, the students were taught how to learn new words by building 100 words, shape, size, and drawing; counting out 100 fruit loops and make a design or picture with them; and come up with 100 words that describe their best friends. b) posting of new words through the word wall c) poetry in your pocket day which asked the students to put the poem which they wrote in their pockets and recite it before a teacher, parent, or students d) poem reading like Dancing Pants by Shel Silverstein, e) entertaining activities also proved to be effective such as literacy activity games like playing word search, boggle, ending words, site words, how to use the computer, E.S.A games, scrabble, smart boards, cursive writing and book reports. 3. Learning to write effectively prepares students for success in both the classroom and the outside world. Being able to express oneself well in writing can be a great source of power. I helped the students develop writing skills by applying interactive and effective methods. These include: a) writing exercises about topics that are close to the experiences of the students like their favorite junk food, pair of pants, first day of spring, what you are thankful for in your life, etc. or topics about special occasions such as Easter where they are asked to relate what they did on that special day with their family b) through site words the students were asked to free write story about anything that comes into their minds and describe how they feel about it c) through excursions or trips where children were able to see plays or shows (like retumbia, Cinderella and Doctor Amelia Bedelia), and were asked to write their viewpoints about the show or they are taken to class trips to the museum of natural history to share what they saw and what was their favorite part of the place d) new spelling words for the week where students write the new words 5 times and make a sentence for each word e) research about Egyptians pyramids and its contents f) playing site word bingo g) writing letters to their parents or write letter to their teacher about what they did over the weekend. h) the five-sense taste test, the students write about their favorite ice cream flavor (vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry) and make a graph for it i) students practice writing their address on loose-leaf paper 3 times, this helps students learn how to prepare an address envelope j) story reading like "Dear Mr. Blueberry" by Simon James where students are required to write Mr. Blueberry with an address envelope k) the students are also taught to do persuasive writing l) students were taken to a field trip to Sony wonder technology laboratory and explored the communication and entertainment technology of the company. From the trip, they are instructed to write their experience. 4. Reading is the culmination of building vocabularies. To effectively develop reading comprehension, I introduced the following specific activities enabling them to develop reading comprehension skills. Reading of stories were helpful for students, stories like: a) Dr. Seuss' book "It's Not Easy Being a Bunny". Students were asked to write the detailed events and share the favorite part of the story. b) "Holes" by Louis Sacher was taken in the class per chapter. The story taught the students about food, dance, music, and Ireland. They are asked to draw and write a couple of sentences about the events and the new characters in the story including writing summaries of the previous chapters, comparing and contrasting the story from the book viz the movie. In this activity, the students are taught the lessons on contractions (for example; have not, haven't, it is, it's, and did not, didn't). c) "Sammy the Seal" by Syd Hoff. Students were divided into 2 groups to write a book report. Students paired up and posted questions to each other on spelling words. They were also asked to memorize the names of the months of the year and created May calendar posting their birthdays. 5. One of the most important branches of learning in basic education is Science. In order to gauge students' knowledge in this subject, a science test was given to the 4th grade. The test was divided in two parts and given separately. 6. Mathematics is one of the most fundamental subjects in education. To ensure learning takes place, I prepared the following activities for students to follow: a) counting money and give out change. To enhance learning, the class applied the lesson during the class bake sale. b) fraction and name collection box c) finding out different ways to break down a number and the operation to be used in solving the problem d) New York State testing program in mathematics for the 4th and 5th grades e) understanding problems, planning, solving problems and coming up or checking solutions f) practice review in the Kaplan test companion New York mathematics through sample test questions in preparation for the math test on March 6,7, and 8. g) solving word problems h) measuring things with rules, tape measure, yardstick and what we can measure i) doing patterns by counting and coloring square and triangle. j) math games using adding, subtracting, and multiplication. k) learning fractions. l) learning how to graph. m) skills link in everyday mathematics for 5th grade A child's learning needs are best served by a specifically designed teaching method. It is important to have educational programs that are tailored to fit the children's needs and ensure that learning takes place. The teaching techniques I have applied facilitate learning where children can process information in the manner by which they most easily can absorb the material. It is by stimulating a zest for learning that we can perform the greatest service to those in our care. As I personally believe, it is possible that a teacher could be molding a future Abraham Lincoln or a Madame Curie. Read More
