Stark also instructed him to keep the work as secret. Although Hayling got suspicious, he agreed because he was almost out of business. After visiting the site, he examined the hydraulic press and gave his analysis in order to repair it. Then, he examined the machine more thoroughly and discovered that it was being used for a completely different purpose. At the same moment, he discovered uncommon and precious mineral on the site, which he had visited. He barely escapes death when the machines are operated and had to jump from the window in order to save himself.

His thumb was severed in the entire process. AnalysisAccording to the Engineer's Code of Ethics, engineers are expected not to put their professional duties at stake for the sake of their own personal interests. This means that they are expected not to consider financial rewards or other considerations (Code of Ethics for Engineers, 2). In Adventures of Engineer's Thumb, Jeremiah Hayling is considered to be an orphan and young hydraulic engineer, who had started his own company. However, he was new in business and got little work.

Then, one day Lysander Stark came and offered him a job, which was a lucrative opportunity for him. This is an ethical issue in the story. As an engineer, Hayling should have not accepted the offer, which Stark has made. He was aware of the fact that Stark was hiding something but because of his own personal interests and benefits, he took the opportunity as he was out of work. The duty of the engineer is to maintain his professional duties towards his profession and they should be in conflict with his or her personal interests.

Conclusion Ethics is a branch of philosophy that concentrates on dealing with problems of morality. This paper has identified an ethical issue from the Adventures of Engineer's Thumb. The story revolves around Jeremiah Hayling, who is a hydraulic engineer and is out of work. Then one day, Colonel Lysander Stark visited him and offered him a job. He was willing to pay Hayling about 50 guineas. From an engineer's code of ethics, this is an unacceptable practice because they are expected not to consider financial rewards or other considerations
