Extract of sample "The Element of Human Nature"

Frankenstein demonstrates the most valuable traits in literature. One would think that when the nature of a monster is contrasted to that nature of a human being, the nature of the human being would prevail. However, in Frankenstein, we see how easily mankind can become a victim of his own circumstance. The end of the story is the most gripping when we realize that we have been convinced, through the author, to feel more sympathy for the monster than anyone else. After all, he was brought into the world and abandoned by his father.

After many fruitless attempts, he only turns to evil as the last resort. As a result, we feel pity for him. This is not the conclusion we would expect from any tale that concerns a monster. This aspect of the story is an example of what makes literature valuable - the unexpected turn of emotion.Another valuable aspect of literature is the fact that the ending cannot be predicted. In Frankenstein, we would expect that the monster be killed but it is Victor that dies and the monster left to suffer on earth.

This kind of unexpected ending is another way in which the author makes us consider life from another perspective. Literature has an impact on individuals because of their everlasting value. Shelley's Frankenstein offers a form of literature that makes us think not only about ourselves but or place in the world. Actions mean things and Frankenstein illustrates how this occurs.
