Order # 116301: Business (How does business A attempt to gain competitive advantage) Introduction I have chosen to investigate that whether Ford is more Competitive than Mitsubishi. Competitiveness is a company's share of world markets for its products. When a firm sustains profits that exceed the average for its industry, the company is said to have the competitive advantage over its rivals. Businesses use either price or quality to gain competitive advantage. The businesses that I have selected to compare operate in the automobile market. Since the invention of first automobile till today, the automobile business is expanding and expansions does not seem to stop in the future coming years. More and more consumers are buying automobiles and development of better infrastructure in terms of road networks has yielded more usage of automobiles by the consumers. Ford has a market share of 18% in the global market whereas Mitsubishi Motors has a market share of around 1 to 2%. There is a lot of competition in the automobile market with big giants of US car manufacturers, Japan car manufacturers and European car manufacturers across the world. The other competitors include Chrysler, General Motors Corporation, Toyota Motors, Nissan, Honda, Mercedes, and BMW. Research To answer my question I've used variety or research methods: Primary research methods and Secondary research methods. Primary research involves obtaining original data directly about the product and market. Primary research data is data that does not exist before, this data is accumulated to answer specific question. I used this research method because it provides the actual date directly from the market and analysis or this data can give accurate results. Secondary research methods include gathering data that has already been produced from relevant sources. Less effort is required in gathering this information and hence more concentration can be done on analyzing this information. The results from research are attached as Appendix-A Analysis of Results The results compiled in the Appendix-A are referred for analysis. Research has yielded the following: Ford Motor Company holds a competitive edge over Mitsubishi Motors as it has captured a market share of 18% world wide as appose to Mitsubishi Motors 1.5% only. Other than North America, Ford Motor Company sales are higher and are steadily growing. Mitsubishi Motors apart from Russian markets has failed to capture any significant sales. Ford Motor Company has shown profit for the third consecutive year amounting to $2 billion or 1.04 per share giving rich dividend to the investors and gaining trust of investors thereby hoping to get more investments in the next year. Mitsubishi motors trying to survive have suffered an operating loss of 13.8 Billion yen for the first quarter of 2005 alone. Significant root cause being the loss of revenue due to fewer sales in North American markets. Ford Motors Company had a Sales Revenue of $178.1 Billion in 2005 as appose to $171.7 billion in 2004 significantly indicating the increase in the sales world wide. Mitsubishi motors had generated Sales revenue of 485.8 billion yen, down 71.8 billion yen from the same period last year (557.6 billion yen), indicating a downward trend in the sales of Mitsubishi vehicles world wide. Questionnaires and interviews with the different people have yielded a sure case of popularity of Ford brand names as oppose to the Mitsubishi brand names. Mitsubishi has one famous Shogun vehicle popular to some extent in UK, USA. Other than that its brands are unknown to the consumers. In contrast, Ford models like Mondeo, Ford Focus and Expedition are very famous brands popular among the consumers. Ford Company offers low cost vehicles to the consumers that are affordable by most of the consumers across the globe. Ford brands capture all levels of the consumers from low price to higher price starting from low cost hatch back vehicles to expensive Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) which are true value to its money. Summarizing in UK the starting price of the lowest model is 6995 pounds and the starting price of the most expensive model is 19000 pounds. In contrast Mitsubishi vehicles are expensive and are not capturing the total consumer market. The vehicles can only be bought by a hand full of consumers that can afford that high price. Price range for Mitsubishi vehicles is starting from 9000 to 30, 000 British pounds. In comparison for the same range of product, Ford has a lesser value vehicle and Mitsubishi has a higher value vehicle. This is due to the low cost of production achieved by Ford and higher cost of production by Mitsubishi Motors. Ford Motor Company in 1996 certified its operating plants in 26 different countries for ISO 14001. This indicates the company's interest in quality. They also are the first company to introduce the dual airbags as well as the ABS braking system. In addition to this, the vehicles produced by them are of superior quality and fulfilling the safety standards. Ford did achieve significant progress toward improving fuel efficiency during 2005, with the successful introduction of the hybrid electric escape. This indicates the focus of ford on achieving fuel efficiency, an indicative of improving quality of their product. There is no evidence found of Mitsubishi motors being an ISO 14001 certified company and no evidence of Mitsubishi focus on fuel efficiency. However, Mitsubishi Motors is known for its high quality engines that provide high power to the vehicles. Ford Company has sustained profitability for the past 3 consecutive years due to which providing significant dividends to the investors which has resulted in a very good stock position for the company. The stock prices have shown a steady increase and stability over the past 3, 4 years and that indicates good performance by the company and it is listed as top ten of the automobile manufacturers in the world. Mitsubishi motors because of continuing losses in the past years, has got a very instable stock position with shares not being stable and going continuously down with little or no dividends by the company to the share holders as its trying to come out of a multi million dollar debt. Evaluation The data for the research was gathered from authentic resources. Therefore the results obtained from the data are reliable. Ford's focus on producing low fuel consumption, low priced vehicles, focus on quality and a comprehensive business plan to improve the market share have led them to the successful road that they are on. Mitsubishi motors high performance, compact vehicles and its recent launch of a new brand Colt are the major factors that can contribute to its success. However, the research results and their analysis have clearly yielded that Ford Motor Company has a competitive advantage over Mitsubishi Motors as it has captured 18% of the world share in the automobile industry and has sustained profits for 3 consecutive years and it has achieved that by having a clear cut business plan, by merging major companies like Jaguar, Lincoln, Mercury, and Land Rover, also by focusing on reducing the cost of production so that low value vehicles can be produced affordable to all consumers. In order to be competitiveness, Mitsubishi motors can find low cost production methodologies, can do mergers with other car manufacturers to increase the market share and can improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicles to win the consumer market.
