Extract of sample "Nursing as a Career"

Nursing- Admission Essay Nursing literally means the work of caring for the sick or injured or infirm. This in my opinion is a noble profession of fulfilling the medical needs of a patient and providing the best care to him to make him forget his pain and agony. Definition of success varies from person to person, depending upon the circumstances and the ambitions. In my opinion long term success means living up-to the expectations of the society, helping the humanity and being recognized as a person with a heart while realizing one's goals of becoming an expert in the chosen field.

"Service to humanity is service to God." This saying has been a great influence in my opting for 'Nursing' as a career. The desire in me to serve the humanity while pursuing career goals helped in selecting the course, as this field has lot to learn while assisting in curing the injured or infirm. I was 8 yrs old when my grandfather was paralyzed and bed ridden while my granny used to take good care of him, trying her level best to minimize grandpa's pain, without letting him feel the pain look after him.

Then I realized the meaning of being a nurse. I therefore started gaining an interest in Nursing since childhood. The Cochran School of Nursing is one of the oldest hospital-based school of nursing and the largest school in Westchester County. Known for its quality nursing programs with emphasis on developing individual goals and participation in life long learning, the nursing program at Cochran is in my opinion the best suited for someone like me who has traveled all the way from India to United States for studying but somehow could not realize the dreams as I was caught in the web of life's circle.

I see an opportunity to realize my dreams with the professional guidance from Cochran and I'll try my level best to come up-to the expectations of the Institute. I am a budding youth with dreams in my eyes, lots of hope and determination to do something for the society in general, for my parents & family and for myself in particular. My short term goal is to gain credentials as a qualified learner, who's ready to accept the challenges and learn from them. Nursing is a challenging career with potential for lifelong learning.

Modern technology has made this field all the more exciting, with devices and gadgets diagnosing the illness and administering medicines. But a personal touch to all this comes from a caring nurse. In the long run I'd like to be known as a person who can make a terminal patient forget about his pain and agony even during his last days.In my opinion the profession of nursing requires;Compassion for another's suffering and love for the feelings of their patientsVery high ethical standardsCommitment to the professionGood interpersonal communication abilityCritical cognitive process based thinking abilityHighest standards of integrity and honestyDealing with difficult and often unpleasant circumstancesWorking in physically demanding and often stressful environmentContinuous aptitude for learning throughout one's life.

I will make all efforts to inculcate these noble ideas and practices into nursing. At the moment I am working in a hospital and studying for Pre requisite for RN at Adelphi University. I am preparing to be a well qualified nurse with determination and enthusiasm. I am sure if granted an opportunity at the Cochran School of Nursing, I'll prove to an asset for the college and the profession.
