Extract of sample "Choosing to Nurse as a Profession"

My qualifications include a Bachelor of Science and Legal Assistant Major, and a minor in Business Administration (Madonna Livonia, MI, 1989). I have an experience of over 15 years as a skilled paralegal. In the fall of 2005, a significant event occurred in my life, which has influenced my life greatly. My mother had to undergo a total hip replacement surgery. It was a very anxious and tense period for my family and me. We had a lot of questions and concerns regarding the surgery, and it was the nursing staff that addressed all these issues in a competent and compassionate manner.

I was very impressed by their knowledge, professionalism, and compassion. It was this experience, which greatly influenced me to pursue a career as a nurse. Since I feel that my career as a paralegal is stagnating, I wish to fulfill my dream to become a nurse. My reasons for choosing nursing as a profession are more than one. By nature, I am a sincere, dedicated, and caring individual. I am both an excellent communicator and a good listener. I find nursing to be a very challenging and exciting profession.

At the same time, it also involves a lot of responsibility and requires a great deal of both physical and mental strength. By helping others, I would get immense job satisfaction, which no other profession could possibly give me. I also consider that the nursing profession would give me the job security that I desire. The nursing profession would also help me to develop my personality and learn about all aspects of human life. It would help me to develop my organizational, leadership and communication skills.

I have no doubt about my ability and motivation to complete an intense program of nursing study. I have an accurate idea of what nursing involves and have the determination and drive to be an excellent nurse. I have the ability to perform well under pressure, as well as efficiently handle a variety of complex tasks, and meet deadlines on a consistent basis.  I have learned to deal with tense situations by setting aside my emotions. I feel this would help me as a nurse to deal with a patient in a professional manner.

At the same time, I have learned what empathy really means, and have personally experienced what a family goes through in a hospital environment. This would help me take an active interest in addressing all their concerns and questions. Being a sincere and dedicated individual, I am sure that I can meet any requirements during the study period. My future goal after graduation is to be a pediatric nurse, since I love children. More specifically, I would like to work and get experience in the neonatal unit.

The field of neonatology has grown rapidly over the years and is both challenging and stimulating. A neonatal nurse is a vital part of a critical care team, and I feel that I would get adequate job satisfaction as a neonatal nurse.
