Vampire Mike could feel his heart thump inside his chest as he walked gingerly towards the gym along with his buddy Rob. Winter seemed to arrive early, as a thick shroud of fog engulfed the campus, on this last day of October. The beams of the flashlights they brought along looked too weak to pierce the intense haze that surrounded them; so was the light from a full moon that lit the campus ground earlier when they had left the gym. Bob had forgotten his cell phone in the locker, and wanted Mike to accompany him, to retrieve it.

“It’s spooky out here, man!” Rob said, yawning. His warm breath forged a vacuum in the dense fog. A breeze swept across their faces and Mike held his breath as a pungent odor permeated the air: the scent of rotten blood; the primordial smell of death. “More than spooky,” Mike said, listening to the rustle of dry leaves on the sidewalk. “It’s eerie…” Beads of perspiration broke on his forehead despite the chill the wind carried with it. “Yeah.” Rob nodded his consensus. “Sort of creepy; like you’re in a haunted house.

”“Maybe, we should call it a day and return to the dorm,” Mike said hesitating to move forward. In the distance a dog wailed. Another caught up with it; then another. Soon the sounds culminated into a maddening crescendo of howls, rending the night air.“Holy Jesus,” Rob’s body shuddered as he spoke. “What a pack of howlers! They’d drain the gut of any man.” Suddenly, Mike stopped in his tracks, staring ahead. “Hey, what’s wrong?” Rob’s voice sounded like the hiss of a serpent, and Mike could see blood literally draining from his `plump cheeks.

A few meters ahead of them, Mike watched the mist part, presenting before him the silhouette of a tall man standing in front of the gymnasium. “Did you tell anyone to meet us here?” Mike knew the quiver in Rob’s voice didn’t come from the cold. “No. My only hope is that he’s one of the security guards,” he replied training his flashlight on the figure. The man’s teeth sparkled in the sudden burst of luminance from the flash light. The raws looked like the jaws of a shark; only difference was that the teeth were a sheer white, and the bordering gum line had a crimson hue.

Mike could almost feel his lugs turning into blocks of lead. Behind him he heard Rob’s hushed voice. “A vampire, O God, we are done!” “There’s no use panicking, Rob” Mike said, stepping back. “Let’s weigh our options. We can run to the car and let him chase us, or we can race to the cafeteria, grab the knives and garlic and fight him.Rob patted Mike’s hand. “We’ll fight him.” Then, he suddenly bolted towards the cafeteria. As Mike charged behind him, he heard the noise of flapping wings.

He rushed into the cafe, banging the door shut behind him.“Your door can’t stop me; neither can your windowsills.” Mike heard the monster’s voice even as he turned from the door, breathing heavily. It had taken the form of a bat, and swooped down from the window, towards Rob who stood in the front side. The monster regained the form of a man as it touched the ground. Jaws clenched, his lips parted to reveal the pairs of fangs in his mouth. Rob cowered, falling to a corner of the café’s pantry, as the creature seized him by bending down.

“A puncture by my fangs,” it said, “is all it will take for you to follow me like little pups.” His voice sounded as if it were coming from some deep void within earth’s womb. Fingers of his left hand, gripping Rob’s throat, tightened. The long nail of his thumb dug into his Adam’s apple, and Rob squirmed like a worm trying to extricate from the trap of a lizard’s mouth. Mike flung himself towards the kitchen sink. The vampire threw Rob to the wall, went after Mike and trapped his neck in a forearm.

“Heading for the water tap, right,” the monster spoke to Mike in a hissing tone. “You know, I can’t stand running water, don’t you?” The stench of rotten blood gushed into Mike’s face; he held his breath and struggled to break free. The more he tried the tighter the monster’s grip became. Mike had read that the vampires are affected and finally killed by sunlight. But it was a far cry; morning was several hours away and by that time the monster would have done away with both of them.

What could they do? Then, suddenly, as if out of the blue, the idea struck him.Mike raised both his legs up to his waist high and threw his right leg across the kitchen sink, hitting the water tap with his feet. It broke cold water from the pipe splayed along their bodies and the vampire shrieked, loosening its grip on Mike’s neck. In a flash, Mike raised his left knee, connecting between the monster’s legs. Off balance, the vampire fell backwards, holding his groin and yelling as if the water were boiling oil.

Within a few seconds, the monster turned into a tiny bat.Simultaneously, Rob grabbed a strainer from the kitchen stand. “I will get you, son of a bitch!” He smashed the strainer to the ground, trapping the bat inside it. “Gotcha!” Rob’s eyes turned to look at Mike, and then he laughed, the extra flab on his tummy trembling beneath his silk shirt as if it had assumed a life of its own.“What do we do now?” Mike asked.Rob stopped laughing and took a deep breath. “We’ll leave this bastard here.

When the sun rises and light filters in, he will die his slow, excruciating death!”“Let’s put something heavy on the strainer so he won’t slip out,” Mike suggested. Rob picked up a metal disc and placed it over the strainer. “Let’s go.”Mike walked towards the door, and Rob followed. As he exited, Mike heard the flapping sound of wings and turned back, to stare at the emptiness before him.Rob had vanished. The EndAlternative Ending:Rob stopped laughing and took a deep breath. “We’ll leave this bastard here.

When the sun rises and light filters in, he will die his slow, excruciating death!”“But we can leave him just like that. We gotta make sure he perishes,” Mike said.“Okay, then we will sit guarding him till morning.” Rob smiled.“Yeah, we will sit through the night keeping watch,” Mike suggested. “After all, his death matters more than a hundred night’s sleep.”Mike fished a pack of Marlboro from his pocket, lit one and tossed the pack to Rob. The Vampire kept squirming inside the strainer, squealing. The End
