Billions of gamers worldwide spend lots of their waking times in exciting and thrilling adventures, endless exploration, and various quests assuming the role of different heroes. Having the most number of subscribers indicates that WoW is preferred by customers worldwide because of its unique features. However, amidst the wide acceptance and popularity of this online game, it is not exempt from criticisms and negative reviews both by the users and the general public. This paper will focus on evaluating WoW by looking at its unique features, how it compares by other MMORPG, and criticisms and issues against it.
The popularity of WoW in the online gaming community can be attributed to its unique features which sets it apart from its various competitors. With WoW, players enjoy a wide choice of identities as they can choose from the ten races, nine different classes, and various occupations each having different abilities. However, there are only two factions namely the Horde and the Alliance. The player’s level and experience is enhanced through the accomplishment of quests. Within the vast world of Azeroth, players can undertake quests which vary in complexity. While some quest requires gamers to deliver documents or items from non-player creatures, other may necessitate the slaying number of beasts or escorting important characters out of danger. Considering the vastness of Azeroth, transportation is a key component of adventure. Flying is the dominant means of transportation, allowing players to reach their intended destination quickly. For Horde, this is facilitated by gryphons, hippogryphs, and deeprun tram while for the Alliances this is possible through wyverns, vampire bats, and goblin zeppelin. Another feature of WoW is use of four different realms which limits players from their interaction with other players worldwide.
