Extract of sample "Social and Communication Intervention for Children with Autism"

Systematically Alex will go through his token board. In addition, Alex receives physical reinforcement by touching his legs and verbal reinforcement by sitting back and paying attention.

Alex will finish his training for ten minutes, and then he will earn his break and will hand over his break card when he has earned all the tokens. The tokens are then exchanged for his BREAK & beanbag. Utilizing Alex’s visual strength I have fostered and increased his ability to function independently.


  • Alex uses the bell of his timer as a cue for him to go back to his seat after his break. I have laminated daily schedules and procedures for Alex. For I want appropriate behavior from Alex.

  • Alex can now remain seated for about 9 minutes. At times he throws a tantrum but the number of times has definitely decreased.

  • The timer is always set for Alex’s break. Break time is usually less than work time. For instance, every ten minutes earns a break of two to three minutes.

  • If Alex remains seated during his work time there will be less physical prompting and sign language in correcting Alex.

  • Alex will carry his backpack while walking in the hallway. At times he throws a tantrum but with prompting and sign language he stands up and behaves.

I have always been alert for high anxiety signs or any signs of stress where Alex is concerned.

I am aware that signs of stress may include putting hands over the ears, plugging the ears, or squeezing a body part, and have always been alert.

  • Alex is now part of a group but is not able to sit the whole time in this circle. However, he can earn his token by contributing in a small way to this group.

When he starts his tantrums he is sent back to his corner to work and earn one or two tokens and then joins the circle until all tokens are over and thus earns his break


  • Alex will train to walk in the hallway without holding his hand and walk on the right side.

Alex has benefited from the use of instructions in the use of his daily schedules and planners. The monitoring of Alex’s progress from time to time combined with words and actions of encouragement together with the development of a functional communication system has benefited Alex in thinking positively.

Further, when interacting with Alex I strongly assert that Alex maintains eye contact during conversations. Attempts have been made the adaptation and confirm to rules that govern Alex’s behavior have. Similarly, attempts are made to initiate and repair conversations.

By trying to keep Alex engaged he will learn the art of being seated for a period of time without any distractions.

This plan was only for Alex to remain seated for a period of time. The school will be closed for two weeks. However, I would continue working with Alex.
