NARRATIVE WRITING: THE LAST HOUR AT SCHOOL I had been enrolled as a high school at the XiCheng Middle School, and remained at school for the period of over three years. I had been very brilliant student of my school and maintained intimate relations with every classmate. My parents wanted me to proceed to the UK in order to obtain my higher education in England. My father said: “Since you are growing young, it would be appreciable to seek your further education from London.” I agreed with each and every word of my father and was determined to leave my school in China as soon as I got admission at London School and study visa too as well. It is therefore, I had to quit my school immediately. Though leaving my school was really a very hard decision for me, which I could never quit at any cost under normal circumstances, yet the unforgettable memories of the magnificent moments and the heart-melting last hour consumed at school serves as a guiding star for my future days to come. As soon as the visa process was complete, I reached my school and called on the Principal, a kind-hearted and highly enthusiastic personality, who enquired my decision in these words: “Why are leaving the school, as you are a talented student, a very good orator and the member of our school hockey team? Is anything unpleasant has happened with you here”? I nodded my head in negative and replied: “Certainly not kind sir!; your affectionate attitude and encouragement has always been with me throughout; I just preceding to the UK for higher studies.” I presented my documents related to further studies in support, which he went through with a bird’s eye view. He congratulated me warmly and wished me success in future. In addition, he asked the office clerk to prepare the school leaving certificate for me. I got up from my seat and said: “Dear sir! I will never be able to forget your kind behaviour and valuable supervision during my studies under your leadership.” He also got up from his seat and embraced me warmly, which brought tears in my eyes. My announcement of school leaving was really a surprise for my respectable teacher, caring library staff and affectionate classmates. After it, I rushed to my school library to return all the books I had got issued. The librarian, Miss Jane, declared me as one of the most sophisticated, studious and hardworking students of the school. Afterwards, I reached the classroom of my alma mater, where the atmosphere of the whole class turned gloomy on hearing about my departure from the school. The teacher concentrated on me and discussed my future plans in such a way: “Well dear boy, since you are about to leave the school and the country as well, what are your future plans over there in the UK”? I replied: “I aim to become pilot and join the Air Force of China on my return.” “May you meet with all your dreams one day”, she prayed. My classmates started commenting on my departure. One of them said: “Will you remember us or will forget all the days spent together”? The other replied: “He will not recall our company as the UK is far more advanced country with lots of thrill and amusements.” “Never”, I replied, “I can never scratch from my heart the remarkable incidents and golden days, I spent with you here in this school, which is my alma mater and made me learn how to read and write n a proper way.” My classmates had arranged a farewell party for me in the classroom. They had arranged cold drinks and fast foods in my honour to reveal their sweet feelings for me. There was lot of fun and thrill in the party. One of our classmates sang a song of departure, which caused tears and sighs. The teacher called me at the stage to deliver some words before I finally depart from the school. I rose to the occasion and delivered these words: Since it is in the nature of man that he does not stick to one single thing and looks for better opportunities in life, he travels wide and happily undergoes all the difficulties during the course of life to reach his destination. But he never forgets his sheer feelings of love for his motherland, his family, teachers, peers, classmates and playmates at any cost. The entire class and the sacred premises of my school will always be in my prayers.” Then our teacher related us the lines from the poem of Alfred Tennyson, which reflect the essentiality of change in all objects of nature: The Old order changeth, yielding place to new, And God fulfils Himself in many ways, Lest one good custom should corrupt the world….” (Idylls of the King: line 48-50) Then my friends asked me for group photos with our teacher and the entire class. I recalled Robert Browning’s “The Last Ride Together” and compared it to my departure. Tears started flowing from my eyes while looking at the classroom and the gorgeous panorama outside the class through the window-panes. It looked each and every thing of the school including the lush green school garden, the firm trees, dancing flowers, swaying leaves, school auditorium, all doors and windows, and the peaceful corridors—all are saying me good-bye forever. I left the class along with Emily, Margaret, Sandy, Rebecca, Jessica and others and started wandering here and there in every place of the school premises particularly the school library and canteen. The book shelves of the library and my specific seat there was much enough to bring tears in my eyes. The smiles and giggling, shared with the classmates time and again, at canteen are my precious asset, memory of which turned the tears into sighs. The most remarkable event of the last hour was the touching embraces and hugs of my tender, co-operative, polite, sympathetic and loving classmates, who looked more miserable and depressed than I even. I cannot forget the love and kindness in their eyes at the eve of my departure. Maria requested me to sit at the stairs for some moments in order to take snaps in order to preserve the golden moments through the camera lens. We drew snaps in all the places, where we used to spend our time. At last, I got up to leave the school, my beloved alma mater. My teachers, staff and friends presented me bouquet of fresh roses, prayed for my bright future, wished me successes and best of luck. Thus, keeping countless sweet memories in mind and preserving lots of fun and scenes in my eyes, I left the school premises with very heavy heart and swollen eyes after spending my last hour at school.
