Running Head: Operational Definition and Model Building; Introduction to Scanning Operational Definition and Model Building; Introduction to Scanning [Writer’s Name] [Institute’s Name] Operational Definition and Model Building; Introduction to Scanning Abstract Life of an average American has been changed since the revolutions in the field of IT. This has not only affected the way people work, but also where they work and in what manner they work. All the work on internet is being done by the wires and the digital devices as email and the voice mail. There has been a mass change in the organizations and the way in which these organizations work. Another point that needs to be pondered is that in what ways these digital devises will have an effect on the social lives of the community. Introduction IT related innovations and changes are those that are leading towards even more changes as has been seen in case of the entertainment industry as well as the ways in which the information is delivered. In this way not only the production of these packages is affected but also the ways in which they are produced and consumed. These are only some of the institutions that have been seen to be affected by the IT related innovations but here the point that needs to be emphasized is the changes in the social lives of the community citizens with an understanding towards the roles that are to be played in the society. Moreover the political lives and interactions on the political level have also changed. There have been many arguments in this regard as it has been said that with an addition in the technologies as emails, online discussions as well as the fact availability of information as these are the reason that will lead to the formation of a society that shall be more engaged, more informed as well as a participatory society in which the society members will be more inclined towards the computers as well as the internet. In this kind of society the human interest as well as beliefs is the ones that can be manipulated. Reports by Stanford University These are all the changes that are to be argued in case of there pros and cons. In this case there has been no realization as to what can be the meaning deduced from these changes and if these are the positive changes or negative changes as they seem. With this it has to be seen that are the colligated changes as are seen in the community’s social lives are going to bring out any positive effect or any negative effect. As has been discussed there are some changes that are going to be shoeing there moderate effects as well as there are some changes that will have lesser effects on the social lives still there are many that can have dire consequences. In this very argument the main part of discussion can be the usage of these technologies especially the internet. The highest ratio of the internet is used in emailing as has been seen in this case that the 90% of the internet is used in emailing. Many surveys have been done in this regard and the findings suggest that the internet has many uses and it is used for more than just the entertainment. Digital libraries are the one aspect that has taken the major portion of an importance of internet in the society. At least 65% of the American households have a computer in home while the 19% of these are the ones who own multi computers in one place. Moreover as the data suggests 55% of the American population has access to the internet. Moreover it has been said that the greater the amount of time people spend on the internet the greater is a reduction in the social life of these users. It has been seen that the internet users spend lesser time on talking on the phone with there friends and the percentage has been estimated to be around 25%. With this it has been noticed that there has been a decrease in the traditional media including the TV as well as the radio. It has been noticed that as the usage of internet increases, an interest and inclination of people towards internet decreases. In this case there are some differences in the ratio of internet access. It has been seen that the ratio of people who use internet in different demographic areas are different thereby it can be said that the results in one area cannot be any similar to the results and consequences in the second area. However these are the differences only account for 6% as here one point that needs to be added is that the way people use internet has been the same all over the word that reduces the differences on the demographic level. Main issues that the usage of internet has been raised are the effects on the internet on the social lives as well as the usage patterns of internet users. Some of the important findings that have been seen in this regard is that hours being spend on the internet are even more than the years that they spend on internet. The quality time that the people spend with their families has been reduced with the over usage of internet. In this case for the conduction of survey the main methodology that has been used includes the survey that had been conducted over the internet. And the results have been compiled from all the surveys that had been conducted and statistics showed the effects that have been shown on the social lives that the people have having an effect from the internet. Reports by UCLA According to the reports on internet usage that has been given by UCLA, it has been estimated that by the year of 1997 around 19 million Americans had been using the internet. The growth that internet has seen in the last five years has been massive and still the growth is still massive. It has been noticed that in the first quarter of the year of 2000, around five million Americans had joined the world of internet and around 55000 new users are added to the internet world nearly every day. The media coverage that is being done u by the internet has had an increase and this has made the people understand the online technology in more detail. The spread can be estimated by saying that the word internet has been used in the media coverage around 7 million times in the first quarter of the year of 2000. Figure: Internet Media usage The UCLA Internet Project has estimated that around two thirds of the American population have the access to the internet with the most basic of the service being used is the email . It has been said that in the year of 1998, the number of the paper mail delivered by the post offices in the United States equaled to around 101 billion while in comparison the number of the email messages delivered by the internet users in the same years totaled to four trillion. Thus here it would not be a wrong addition to say that the email has become the main communication tool in the whole world. Moreover in this respect it has been estimated that around 76% of the users are the ones who check there emails once a day. Figure: Average hours being spent on internet Figure: Average internet connect timings Comparison of the two reports As the paper has discussed and has estimated the two report that have been given by the Stanford university as well as the UCLA, it can be seen that the reports that have been given by the UCLA are much more detailed, are based on an in-depth analysis and the figures have been given from an year to year coverage that are helpful in making the estimates about the growth of the internet over the years. Percentages and the figures that have been given clearly indicate the speed that has been attained by the growth of the internet and the speed by which it has reached the users not only within USA but also around the world. As compared to the reports of UCLA, the Stanford university are a comprehensive analysis of the same topic and the reports, although cover the topic in a very comprehensive manner however still the details as the figures and the percentages are the ones that are found ot be missing in this case. Conclusion Changes are followed by many changes. Internet and IT is an industry that has been seen to evolve with time and these are the changes that are to be shown in the daily social lives of the people in many ways. The businesses have evolved as the consumer transactions have also changed. Money matters have changed as well as the categories to businesses has changed. The greater the number of internet users the greater is the ratio of the changes being implemented in many cases. It has been seen that still the changes are on a smaller scale however this is the number that is growing at a higher rate and the changes that are seen can be positive or dire as well.
