My children Joe, Jennifer, and Johnathan have been the best a father could ever ask for. Their love, patience, and daily support--during my entire military career, extensive absences due to deployments, and stressful situations--have been the motivating force throughout this rewarding experience at the American Military University.
I also want to dedicate this work to all Soldiers who are fighting the war on terrorism. Finally, I want to dedicate this work to the parents, wives, husbands, and children of Soldiers who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom.

I want to acknowledge my thesis professor Joseph Varner, for sharing ideas and steering me in the right direction throughout this project. I would also like to thank all the AMU Professors--Thomas Pfundenstein, Anna Simmons, Larry Forness, and Edwin A. Bundy--who assisted me along the way by providing outstanding educational guidance and support. These individuals are truly the top-notch scholars in today’s homeland security environment. In addition, the AMU staff, those responsible for providing customer service to all students: you are the bread and water of the university, and I thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

Also, I am deeply indebted to all the military and government officials who offered their assistance and shared valuable information. Most importantly, my heartfelt gratitude goes out to Ms. Carey Putz, who was always willing to proofread my writing assignments and fill my paper with red ink marks. Her extensive editing skills were the key to my success during my graduate studies. Finally, to all my fellow online classmates, this experience has been very rewarding and, even though we have never met in person, I will always remember our discussions and debates.
I propose to the Thesis/Research Paper Professor and to the Department a study of the following topic to be conducted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in National Security Studies.
