In many ways, the ANA is the prime example of a working regional trade association. The association is headquartered in two distinct locations, where both locations perform two different functions. The first location, in New York City, regulates the practices of marketers and sets forth industry initiatives. The second location, in Washington D.C., manages industry affairs and the relationship between marketers and legislative rights, as well as a focus on public policy.

Because ANA membership is open only to client-side marketing organizations, agencies and media companies are not eligible for membership. Joining the association brings client-side marketers several advantages, including marketing/media committees, workshops, national conferences, advocacy initiatives, dedicated research experts, and marketing insights in an online database. Thus, ANA membership is beneficial to all sorts of marketing companies. With 45 companies looking to advance the interests of advertisers and their clients, the Association of National Advertising Managers evolved nearly a century ago in 1910.

In 1914, with prominent clients such as Macey Company, Burroughs Adding Machine Company, and Sherwin Williams Company, the trade association adopted the current title of the Association of National Advertisers.
