In this essay I will present comprehensive overview of operations management and its potential implementation for the enhanced business management. The most important element of this research is to outline the implementation of operations management and the role it has to play in organizations within the UAE. UAE is less developed nations as compared to European nations and the implementation of the OM makes the overall organizational management and handling in the business easier. Operations management is a paradigm of industry lined by means of the manufacture of products and deliverance of services, as well as engages the accountability of making sure that business processes are well-organized in areas of employing as small resource as needed, plus effectual in conditions of convincing consumer needs. It is linked by means of organizing the procedure that adapts contributions in the shapes of labor, materials also energy into production like services and goods (Spain Exchange, 2009). Definition (OM) “Operations are collection of core actions of an organization, and engage the manufacturing, selling, and maintenance of the products and services that the organization produces” (Shelly, Cashman, & Vermaat, 2005). And “Operations management is acknowledged as production/operations management; design, operations, and improvement of the productions/operations systems that develops the organization’s main products or services” (Shim & Siegel, 1999). “The operations management of a company consists of the design, operation, and enhancement of the activities that produce and distributes the basic products and services of the company. From an organizational approach, operations management can also be described as the organization of the direct resources that are necessary to develop and distribute company’s products and services. Operations management is a part of an organization which deals with the development of products and services, as well as comprises the job of making certain that organization’s actions are well-organized and successful” (Jayalath, 2009). Operations management can exactly be well thought-out as a subject of business related with the manufacturing of commodities and services, and covers the sole accountability of making certain therefore as to business procedures are well-organized in terms of utilizing as low resource as required, and efficient in terms of fulfilling customer needs (Fisher College of Business, 2008). Organizations are normally concerned in operations management for the reason that it gives deep insight into how well and efficiently the processes and procedures of an organization to transform input into useful products for the operation of business are working. The importance of operational management in business cannot be denied as it controls the system of procedure of the entire business. The relative significance of operations management has augmented considerably in current years. Major worldwide competition, product development in short supply and service life-cycles, well educated and conscious customers and the competencies of modern and up-to-date knowledge have put rising pressures on the activities of operations management to enhance output on the other hand providing an extensive collection of high-quality products and services. The competitive workforce and with the increase globalization of marketplace, corporations are distinguishing that operations function can also be used to strengthen their position in the global market place. As I have early stated that operations management is linked with the organizational production and engages the accountability of making sure that company processes are well-organized in terms of by means of as small resource as needed. The operations management also stresses on establishment of the effective parameters for the quality assurance and management. The quality management through operations management in any business is really main working policy. Any business establishes a wide-ranging quality development plan. These plans engaged a significant role in the businesss turnaround and success (Jayalath, 2009) and (Turban, Rainer, & Potter, 2004). Importance of OM function This section presents analysis of the main areas of the operations management. Here I will present the detailed overview of the divisions those are influenced or handled through the operation management. Operations management primarily throws light on watchfully organizing the procedures to produce and give out goods and services. Frequently, businesses working at small level are not concerned about "operations management". On the other hand, they handle the activities that falls in the class of operations management." Foremost, on the whole activities frequently consist of product, development, manufacturing, and delivery. Nonetheless product management is usually reflects on one or further intimately related product that can be acknowledged as a product line (McNamara, 2009). All operations in a corporation are regarded by operations management. Connected activities take in supervising purchases, organization of inventory and raw material, controlling quality, storage, logistics and assessments. Generally we put our attention on effectiveness and efficacy of processes (McNamara, 2009). “Consequently, operations management frequently comprises substantial measurement and deep study of in-house processes and actions. Eventually, the approach operation management is applied in a firm depends enormously on the nature of goods/products or services in the firm, for instance, trade, manufacturing, wholesale, etc” (McNamara, 2009) and (Jayalath, 2009).The main areas of the operation management are: given by (McNamara, 2009); Procurement (Purchasing) Practices Procurement (Purchasing) Practices is regarding purchase of a variety of material from suppliers as well as vendors- materials, encompass services, computers from lawyers, insurance, etc. Management Control and Coordinating Function Management Control and Coordinating Function comprise a wide variety of tasks to make sure that business objectives are always being attained in a successful and well-organized fashion. Product and Service Management The Product and Service Management activities are main activity that are concerned with service and product administration are comparable to those in operations management. Though, operations management is concentrated on the processes of the whole business, rather than organizing a product or service. Quality Management This activity regarding operations management is fundamental to efficient operations management, mainly continuous development. New progressions in quality, like that Total Quality Management and benchmarking, have resulted in advancements to operations management as well. Inventory Management Inventory Management is about the costs management that would be considerable to store and move the inventory. Modern techniques, like that Just-in-Time inventory control, are able to accumulate costs as well as move services and products to clients more quickly. Configuration Management Configuration Management is significant to track the variety of descriptions of services and products. For example we have extensive versions of software that repeatedly developed and we need to assign a version number to track the software editions. This of tracking for the versions is similar to configuration management. Besides we also have variety of areas those are under the influence of the operations management like; Distribution Mediums Inventory management system General Resources about Inventory Control and Management Logistics and Transportation Management Role of Operations Management Manager Operations Management Managers in operations management field play a planned and strategic function in pleasing customer requirements and in consequence making their organizations strong global contestant (Fisher College of Business, 2008). Operations managers are normally concerned about each action in presenting a service or product. They establish and find out what exertion, tools, services, resources, force, and how well the information flows into an operating environment, and finding that how these inputs can effectively be attained and utilized to convince the needs of the market place. Operation managers are too liable for important activities for instance quality and control management, faculty planning, resources management, purchasing as well as development (Fisher College of Business, 2008). According to (The Open University, 2009) it is the job of operations manager to manage the operations and actions that are component of the development of goods and services. Their express tasks consist of organizing the operations actions, implementation of design, planning, organization, performance enhancement, and operations policy. Their indirect functions consist of communication with those managers in other serviceable departments inside the corporation whose functions have an effect on actions. Those departments comprise marketing, accounting, workers, finance and engineering (The Open University, 2009). The functions of operations managers consist of: (The Open University, 2009) Management of staff – the workers carrying out jobs for the corporation no matter they effort directly to produce a good or service or offer help to those who carry out. Staff and the way in which staff is managed are a most important resource of all corporations. Asset management – a corporation’s buildings, facilities, equipment and stock are straightforwardly concerned in or help out the operations task. Management of expenditures– mostly the production expenditures of goods or services are straightforwardly associated with the expenditures of obtaining resources, changing them or distributing them to customers. For several corporations in the private region, reducing expenditures by means of well-organized operations management offers them a significant competitive benefit. Decision making is a major task of all operations managers. Decisions should be made in: (The Open University, 2009) Designing the operations system Organizing the operations system Enhancing the operations system. Role of OM in UAE Operations Management was primarily introduced in the western world in the period of the Second World War. For that time operations management flourished and spread in almost the entire aspects of business and management life. This might be as an outcome of the awareness of the implication of operations management for enhancing the competence of decision making as well as problem solving course of action. Operations management is particularly important to developing countries where deficiency of resources is the standard as well as each possible development to usefulness is enviable for the reason that of relative shortage of resources as well as lack of human capital. Despite the fact that, although operations management was initiated in a number of rising or recently developed nations as the mid-fifties, the position of operations management in these nations is not up to anticipation because of number of troubles as well as problems like that not enough qualified personnel, lack of management support, lack of accurate data, etc (Yousef, 2008). There is not a great deal of research found on operations management in Middle East nation. There are troubles regarding the connotation of operations management awareness, techniques used, levels of usage, application areas, and also other connected matters in the Arab world in wide-ranging as well as in the UAE in particular. Operations Management in UAE employed as a path or like an analytical model to examine the effects of environment variables like that political consideration and government laws on the selection of operations strategy as well as performance for a model of UAE corporations (Yousef, 2008). Market based research carried out by (Yousef, 2008). (Yousef, 2008), presented a better picture of the UAE market and organizational implication of operations management. This research is carried out on 186 organizations and concluded that 137 organizations are aware regarding the operations management and 49 corporations have no awareness regarding operations management based business management. This shows that a majority of the organizations are somewhat or more than moderately aware of operations management in UAE. This might point toward operations management is taking acceptance in the UAE business, organization and management areas and sequentially might augment the degree of usage of Operations Management (Yousef, 2008). Importance of OM in UAE, and is it needed or not? Implementation of the operations management in UAE industry and business working structure provides huge advantages regarding the enhanced business management and handling. This also provides the decision makers a better working and decision making support. I have researched and gathered some main significant points that are achieved through operations management in UAE organization. These advantages are; taken from (Kemp & Yousef, 1995), (Yousef, 2008), and (Jaffar, ElKhatib, Hesson, & Radaideh, 2007) Improve competitive advantage Improve capacity utilization Increase efficiency Improve productivity Improve profitability Increase sales Reduce costs Operations Management Application in UAE The research of (Yousef, 2008) also outlined some of the main areas of the implication regarding the operations management. The implication of operations management in UAE’s corporations is aimed at enhancing the working and management structure. The main areas of UAE Operations Management are (Yousef, 2008): Accounting procedures Manpower planning Stock control Project evaluation Sales analysis So as to stay competitive as well as to survive, corporations require operate efficiently. The entire of these application regions/areas are utilized to develop the competence of operations of the corporations concerned. The other implementation areas as well add to short and long term efficiency to a lesser or greater extent. This might guide one to consideration that definite characteristics establish a number of operations management models additional possible to be accepted than others in the UAE. This can be clarified through the authenticity that operations management users in developing nations and the UAE in relatively have small experience and knowledge in the field of operations management. Additional contributory issues might be the inadequate education and training for operations management. The main areas according to the research of (Kemp & Yousef, 1995) discovered that widespread operations management accomplishment/application areas in the UAE are: profitability analysis, forecasting demand, allocating resources, stock control and product mix (Kemp & Yousef, 1995). Sources of Operations Management knowledge in UAE The source of operations management in UAE comes to diverse dimensions. These dimensions are divers but internally linked. These dimensions can be: (Jaffar, ElKhatib, Hesson, & Radaideh, 2007) Taking courses in operations management Training in operations management Business practice of operations management Books and journals University department establishment Operations Management Techniques used in UAE The research of Yousef (2008) has outlined the utilization of 5 most important operations management techniques in the UAE business and management structure. These techniques are: (Yousef, 2008) Risk analysis Computer simulation Decision analysis Financial modeling Cost benefit analysis This might because of the relative ease of these techniques, as well as probably for the reason that these methods obtained their data input straightly from the business and accounting system. Also, the atmosphere plays an important function in the selection of the methods. Another research by (Kemp & Yousef, 1995), presented some other operations management technique implication in UAE. These techniques engage forecasting models, inventory theory, linear programming, cost benefit analysis and decision theory (Kemp & Yousef, 1995). Problems with implementation Operations Management in UAE There are still huge areas and organization that are still un-aware of operations management and not want to implement operations management for their businesses. These problems can be of diverse nature. The basic problems in the way of operations management implementation can be organizational internal or out-side. In the research and market based analysis of (Yousef, 2008) has outlined a number of aspects and factors that are main hindrence in the way of effective implication of the operations management in the organization of UAE. We can take these factors are preventing the extensive acceptance of utilization of operations management techniques in the UAE at present. The research of (Kemp & Yousef, 1995) has presented the some frequent causes for not employing operations management can be lack of knowledge. Here we also found that the implication of the operations management is often stooped or not implemented due to lack of interest of top management and support. We can images the country like UAE and its organizational structure that often lacks in sufficient economical resources. Sometime organization did not believe on the utilization of operations management (Kemp & Yousef, 1995). The actual obstruction to the extensive utilization of operations management might be because of the basic lack of information, knowledge, expertise and scope of the discipline in the UAE, that creates it hard for the businesses to choose whether they have applicable difficulties. Conclusion In this research I have presented a detailed analysis of the operations research. I have discussed a detailed analysis of the operations management and its great significance regarding the enhanced business and organizational management. This research has also covered a detailed overview of implementation of operations management and the role it has to play in organizations within the UAE. In this research I have found that operations management is still in its childhood stage in UAE on the other hand there are optimistic signs that it will turn out to be better understood as well as will be more extensively used in organizations in UAE. As a result we can say that the future of operations management is bright in UAE. There is only need of more awareness and expertise that can come through establishment of new educational institutes offering such courses in UAE. References Fisher College of Business. (2008).
