Described critical appraisal of research. Discuss your observations about this process, the challenges, and rewards of critiquing research. What suggestions do you have for other professional nurses that will assist them to develop and maintain this skill? This is because, the process includes intrinsic factors of research like study design, methods, results, etc, to analyze the value of the study. Critical appraisal is a very essential component of evidence-based practice which is gaining momentum.

The process of critical appraisal involves identifying the appropriateness of the study for the purpose of evidence-based practice, ascertaining whether the studies have been conducted in a way which makes the results sensible, making sense of the results by analyzing the methodology of analysis and also understanding the meaning of the results in the context of decision making (Burls, 2009). One of the main challenges to implementation of critical appraisal for evidence-based practice is lack of evidence seeking behavior amongst many clinicians, poor attitude towards evidence-based practice, need for appropriate technical knowledge of research design and statistics which are difficult to acquire and lack of time (Brice and Booth, 2005).
