Democracy can be characterized as the most preferred style of governance – mainly due to the rights provided to the citizens. Democracy has been adopted by many states internationally; however, it could be supported that in most of these countries democracy is not fully developed. Different facts have played a role in the failure of democracy around the world. Current paper focuses on the characteristics and the performance of democracy in the Southeast Asia region. Thailand and Singapore are used as examples for highlighting the challenges for democracy in the international community.

It is revealed that the development of democracy in Southeast Asia is quite problematic – there are many obstacles that need to be eliminated in order for democracy to succeed in the specific region. The characteristics and the development of democracy in the Southeast region can be identified by referring to the practices used by the governors of the countries of this region in order to establish democracy or just to improve their countries’ existing political systems – an initiative that have prepared those countries’ political and social framework for democracy.
