Abuse Violence Educational Program for International Workers August 11, Abuse Violence Educational Program for International Workers The objective of this study is to create an educational program on a form of violence that might be of concern to an international health care worker. Questions addressed in this study include those of: (1) How would one expect the information to be presented to benefit the health care workers service in the foreign country they will work in? (2) How would one expect this education to ultimately have an effect on reducing this form of violence?

In what way? And (3) What do you see as the most important modifiable risk factor for this form of violence in this particular geographical setting? What are the chances that this form of violence can be reduced? I. Violence and Abuse and The Health Care Worker Abuse violence represents a prevalent issue for health care workers in many regions of the contemporary world. Health care workers critically need education in this area if they are to effectively function detect the occurrence of violent abuse in their patients and provide health care services to these individuals.

Health care workers also need to be knowledgeable in the area of other services that patients who are experiencing violent abuse can be referred to for additional assistance and services. Various world regions are known to have high rates of familial violence and abuse. One such are of he world is the country of Iraq reported to be characterized by “extraordinarily high levels of cultural and institutional violence…” (Heartland alliance: International Programs, 2010) World wide it is reported that “one out of every here women…will be physically, sexually or otherwise abused during her lifetime with rates reaching 70 percent in some countries.

” (Family Violence Prevention Fund, 2004) II. Educational Program Design for International Health Care Workers The National Institute of Justice reports that there is a need for the development of a new protocol for health care providers who treat individuals affected by abuse and violence. This requires that health care workers world wide be on the receiving end of education and training to assist them in properly documenting and assessing abuse and violence that their patients have endured.

The work of Tacket (2004) states that three actions are needed by health care services in regards to addressing the needs of patients who are abused violently: (1) improvement of information availability on domestic violence and services; (2) provision and acquisition of appropriate training for health care professionals; and (3) instituting systems of enquiry about domestic violence. Tacket (2004) reports that health care professionals and staff “should ideally receive training on enquiring about domestic violence…[as]…appropriate training can overcome health professionals’ concerns about raising the subject and enable them to provide more appropriate care for their patients.

” Educational programs should include the following: (1) how to ask direct questions about experience of violence without compromising women’s safety, for example never asking when a possible perpetrator is present;(2) how to respond appropriately to those disclosing abuse;(3) information on the local availability of services for those experiencing violence;(4) coverage of safety planning for those experiencing abuse; (5) coverage of safe documentation of violence; and(6) includes explicit recognition that a large proportion of those being trained are likely to have personal experience of domestic violence and ensures that time / resources are included to respond to trainees’ own needs regarding any personal experience of abuse.

(Tacket, 2004) Toward this end, this work in writing proposes the institution of an educational training program to be provided to all international health care service workers. The program will offer information concerning referral of patients who have experienced violent abuse to other services such as legal services that can assist and advocate for these patients. The program will provide education to health care service workers that will educate these workers of the physical, psychological, and behavioral signs and symptoms of abuse that they should look for and will further educate health care service workers as to the proper questions to ask the patient for the purpose of assessing the nature and extent of the abuse suffered by the patient.

The educational program is to be delivered via web-based training program format that health care services workers can assess either in a group or individual training and education session and will as well be accompanied by handbook that highlights the information that the educational program has provided to them. The educational program design is such that can be made available to health care service workers in all health care settings world wide. This program will provide health care service workers with the knowledge to assist those who are violently abused in seeking legal assistance to address this issue and ultimately will serve to bring about a reduction in violence and abuse through educating individuals as to how they can address and end the abuse in their own lives.
