Contrary to Supreme Court rulings and the opinion of people who oppose such an amendment, flag burning is not a form of speech. The flag desecration amendment has widespread public support, would restore the Constitution to its original meaning, and would help instill patriotism. (Brady 70)

The process of lowering the flag is part of a long-withstanding and old tradition that is undertaken exclusively in honor of those individuals who have fought and lost their lives in war for their country. It is a mark of respect and of gratitude that this simple action takes place.

This paper outlines the role of the Confederate Flag in American culture. For some the flag represents their heritage as descendants of those who fought with the flag as their standard. To others it represents oppression and degradation. And, to more people it represents the outward expression of allegiance to prejudicial thoughts and beliefs.
However, society had yet to connect the criminal acts against an individual to the larger picture of terrorist acts committed against a society or its institutions.
