Aspect of leadership: There are many aspects that are fundamental to effective leadership. Such aspects include but are not limited to fellowship, authenticity and branding. (Ambler, 2008). This paper talks about the importance of “authenticity” in maintaining effective leadership.One thing that all of us miss in the modern world is authenticity of ideas, commitments, news and actions. Modern era maintains an air of cynicism in the business and politics all over the world. This has fundamentally resulted in a loss of faith of people in their leaders.

This fact explains why many people are reluctant to make visit to polling stations to use their right to vote. In the modern age, it is not unusual for a government to be selected by the number of votes, that are a shear representation of the total population in a country. This results in a state of anarchy and is detrimental to the peace and harmony among individuals of a nation. Authenticity of the leader is one of the most basic requirements that maintain followers’ faith in their leader.

A leader has to frequently make commitments with his followers because of the tough nature of his job. Authenticity of the leader dawns upon the followers cardinally by compliance of the leader’s actions with his commitments. Authenticity in a leadership can be measured on the scale of certain factors. Compliance of the leader’s actions with prior commitments with his followers, maintenance of consistency in the theme of a leader, and, frequent and open confrontation of the leader with the followers are some of such factors.

A leader should be very particular about defining his theme. Theme of a leader serves as a focus of all his progressions. It is imperative that the followers are well educated on the theme of the leader so that they can fully comprehend the leader’s intentions and rationalize his approach towards attainment of the ultimate goal. In addition to that, a leader needs to confess all potential mistakes, that he did unintentionally or that raised doubts among the followers in any manner. These factors solely pertain to the leader in person.

A leader also needs to ensure that he ensures the use of authentic means to convey his message to the followers. Followers, act as per the instructions of their leader and their level of compliance with the leader’s instructions decides for the effectiveness of the leader’s approach. It is, therefore, the leader’s responsibility to ensure that the message that is conveyed to the followers is authentic in all respects. Authenticity maintains followers’ trust in the leader. Trust is something, that is built with years of hard work, and takes not much to be belittled in the followers.

“The challenge is to develop your own sense of conviction, and life experiences can either reinforce or demolish those convictions.” (Ambler, 2008). It is not possible for a leader to survive over the years, without gaining the trust of his followers.
