Extract of sample "Mills Utilitarianism"

The main idea of the paper is based on utilitarianism and how it can be used as philosophical arguments for judging the ethical and moral actions of the individuals. Utilitarianism, therefore, serves as the basis on which the morality of the actions could be judged in a given society.Supporting DetailsMill discusses the idea of Bentham and his view of utilitarianism however; Mill claims that he is the first person who is using this word. He argues that the ranking of pleasure and pain is directly related to the degree of utility one derives from certain actions.

He is of the view therefore that the opinion of the majority should take precedence over others and the actions undertaken by the majority of the population should be binding on others. This is owing to the fact that such decisions or opinions always result in the betterment of society as a whole because society can derive more utility from such actions or decisions.
