However, her greatest achievement came in when she brought up the idea of having nurses registered for them to carry out their practice properly. Her main aim in this was to enhance the protection of the public as well as the profession from unqualified people that may carry out their mal-practice on innocent people. Later on, in 1901, she helped Dr, McGrego,r in grafting the Nurse’s Registration Act that was finally passed in parliament and it was the first one of its kind.

In this, the ill, nurses were expected to have three years training program, a state or national examination, and a state or national register (The Porirua Hospital Museum, n.d). After this establishment, it was felt that something should also be done in the case of midwives. There is also supposed to be some form of training for midwives in New Zealand. It occurred that there were no schools to train them, she had to push for another bill to go through parliament for the establishment of such a school.

This was a more challenging bill as it was put to her to come up with a curriculum for the midwifery training as well as establish state maternity hospitals that were to be used for the training. In this, she only had the goal of ensuring that there were hospitals for women, doctored by women, and managed by women. Later on, in 1904, Richard Seddon introduced the Midwives Registration Act in parliament which was successfully taken into law. He also looked into the establishment of the first maternity hospital that would be used as a training school for midwives.

This was a great challenge to Neil as she had to find a way of equipping a house in three weeks so as to set up this hospital. Stolly managed to create St. Helen’s Hospital in Wellington in June 1905 (D’Antonio, 2006). As seen from Neil’s achievements, it can be seen that she was also someone who relied on numbers. In most of her great achievements that required the passing of the two bills in parliament, Neil required numbers. If the majority would have opposed the bills, the bills wouldn’t have been passed into law.

She needed to persuade a majority just like politicians do in order to have her ambitions met This lesson is not only important to politicians and Neil but to anyone who would want to gain power and influence. The world all over is advocating for democracy in all sectors. This means that for anyone’s opinion to stand, it has to gain majority support. This also means that if anyone wants to have great influence and power, he or she needs to ensure that most of his or her opinions and ideas a backed by many.

Numbers will be the most important thing to such a person. This lesson or aspect of numbers is not only important to politicians. As seen from above, Neil was also able to benefit from it. In addition to this, I have also had an opportunity to benefit from it. There have been times when we have faced too much workload at my workplace as nurses and nurse assistants. During those times, we needed numbers in order to have our complaints about this issue heard. We teamed up in numbers and pushed for something to be done about our case and the management had to listen to our problem and a solution was sought.
