I have learned that a student not doing well in college usually has the most difficulty telling his or her parents that he or she is failing or at risk of failing—is very easily one of the most miserable situations in which students try to thrive. Without a doubt, family therapy can be most complicated because students’ family situations can be very complex—depending upon the individual of course—and this can significantly pose different problems when various elements of the family dynamics either change or are upset.

Thusly, family treatment can be quite complex to navigate. I am constantly trying to improve my ability to treat individuals as people who are part of various family dynamics—taking that into account as I offer solutions and advice to the individual which I think will be well-received based upon the way that I introduce that suggestion. I think my success as a facilitator could definitely be improved by the use of suggestion, rather than necessarily asking pointed questions. For example, I would focus more upon having a conversation about something and see if that would lead to more self-revelation, and, ultimately, a trust could be built between myself and the potential client.

This is because, in the end, clients will not divulge confidences if they do not feel like they have trust in me, or cannot confide in me. Therefore, what is most needful of me is that I must strive to be a better communicator and a better facilitator, of course—by making myself easily emotionally vulnerable or accessible in some way to potential clients. This must be done without divulging too much confidence on my part, but which gives me an aura of reliability. I must be able to access the personalities of my future clients so that they will trust me enough to want to tell me things.
