Art and the Counterculture Experiment in America - Essay Example

The exhibition opened on November 10, 2011, and runs until the 19th of February, 2012. Because the ’60s and ’70s was a time of new cultures and styles, the exhibition shows how artwork embraced a countercultural movement that began to take place in America during that time. The co-curators of this exhibition, Elissa Auther and Adam Lerner, have tried to bring together a range of styles and individuals to present a snapshot of the way American culture was changing during those times.

The centerpiece of this exhibition is a re-creation of Ultimate Painting, which was a famous canvas that was made for the Theatre Dome. The exhibition is partly sponsored by MCA Denver’s Director’s Vision Society members. Specific members that have made considerable donations are Mike and Amber Fries, Mary Caulkins, Scott Miller, and Tim Gill. Further sponsors of the exhibition are the Western States Arts Federation, the Colorado Creative Industries, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
