Of course, the Catholic Church did not like this because politically they would lose power over the people. To make an example out of him, the Catholic Church asked Martin Luther to recant his 95 Theses. When he did not, he was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. This was a huge decision because back then the Church controlled much of the politics and the economy, so to be an outcast to them meant that there was no future for you.
