As already mentioned, the wings were made out of test tubes because these are the most basic equipment in science. Originally, the wings were supposed to use fiber optic lighting, but because of budget restraints, this was simply not possible. In fact, the use of test tubes, although cheaper, gives the sculpture a more natural look.
I quite liked the art work because natural works of art look more realistic. Because the butterfly is hanging from the ceiling, it does appear like it is flying around the room.
