Full Analysis of UMass Alma Mater As a song directed to the of Massachusetts, the alma mater mentions that from the start, people have seen the light that she held in her hand. A torch represents light, therefore, guidance. Light is often used where there is darkness. For centuries, education has been paralleled to light in the dark because it brings enlightenment to people when they become more knowledgeable about the things around them. Thus, on the contrary, darkness is symbolical of illiteracy, emptiness, or nothingness.

As the years went by, the passion of UMass never dimmed. Rather, her light remained its brightness, guiding many people in their lives. As people witnessed more and more graduates of UMass being led into the world where they succeeded, many have dreamed to become one of them and this made them more confident that the school can indeed guide them as she envisioned it. Moreover, the people’s hope that they can be a part of UMass and become successful lessened their fears of what life may have for them.

People witnessed how the university remained steadfast in her dreams for her children despite the adversaries and doubts of the people watching her. Her passion never diminished but rather maintained the desire of those who trusted her and walked with her. As a result, many have placed their trust in her as well, considering the university as good and just.In the last stanza, the speakers with the school the best, mentioning that they desire for her torch to remain steadfastly burning as ever.

They hope that even if they are not here on earth anymore to witness how the school will continue with her vision and mission, may she never grow tired nor put her torch down nor let her passions die. Instead, they desire that her light will shine like a jewel whose worth can never be fathomed. Indeed, no amount of money can ever pay what UMass did to the graduates to help them in their endeavors and as more and more people graduate from the school, her devotion’s worth can never be equaled by a price.

So that the people hail the school and encourage her that they will sail with her, likening themselves to tall ships setting sail, steering more and more. This means that there is no time for them to rest or stop but what UMass has started, that should be continued. As the university calls for her children to go to where beauty and truth are, they are strengthened to further their journey with her.
