[Teacher’s Essay Gay Marriages The issue of gay marriage has become an area of concern due to the increase in activist movements. Initially, the institution of marriage was created to represent the unification of a women and a man. In addition, the natural physiology of humans further proves that marriage and sexual interaction were naturally made to take place between members of the opposite sex. From a religious perspective, homosexuality is an abomination and no religion permits such an act. The basis of this argument statement is that the majority of Americans are religiously affiliated and their lifestyles are governed by principles in the bible. Though the country is democratic, rules and governing is determined by the majority vote which means that the principles of 76% of American people disregard the legalization of gay marriages. With the increasing divorce rate and other societal flaws gay marriage will only increase the flaws in the institute of marriage. This paper will illustrate the problems associated with gay marriage and show that it does not belong in our society. Nine states in America have recognized gay marriage as a legal binding of two individuals. In the other 41 states it is not legally and socially acceptable. Firstly, gay marriage is not a natural process. If same sex marriages were to prevail and out number marriages between opposite sexes, there would a huge decrease in the population. Hypothetically, this would result in the annihilation of the human race which further solidifies the fact that gay marriage is not a natural process. Two females or males are unable to biologically reproduce, which raises questions on the purpose of the subject matter. There is a misconception that individuals who oppose gay marriage are homophobic and perpetrators of hate. However, there are substantial reasons behind this opinion. Gay activists associate legalization of gay marriage with equal rights. In our society equal rights do not exist in this perspective. Some states have laws prohibiting the marriage of close relatives. There are also laws which prohibit individual from marrying minors, animals, multiple individuals and inanimate objects (Normandin, n.p). Hence, equal rights do not qualify as legitimate reason to legalize same sex marriage. Research has also shown that children brought up in families without a male figure usually engage in early sexual activity. Children living in same sex marriages are usually separated from their mother or father who can have adverse psychological effects in the future. It has also been scientifically proven that mothers have a higher level of maternal instinct than men. This trait will be absent in gay families which would also have negative psychological effects. There are also numerous government benefits which are not available to gay couples (‘Rights and Protections Denied Same Sex Partners’, n.p). This is a way of discouraging members of the same sex from marrying each other. This is a legitimate act on behalf of the government due to the fact that heterosexual marriages have the potential to reproduce, which will sustain the American population. In addition, the ban by government of several types of marriage shows that it does not consider happiness as a reason to legalize certain marriages. If gay people feel their happiness and love gives them a right to be legally married, then that means everything should be legal. This includes drugs, murder and other things which make different people happy. Same sex marriage has also been proven to have negative impacts on the society (Baker, 2010). Children in these families face a lot of discrimination which can have an impact on their self esteem and can lead to depression and suicide. Legalizing these marriages would lead to a drastic shift in the composition of society. This will lead to numerous other matters being challenged in court. Other marriages which are illegal in society share similar arguments with gay marriage. Legalizing gay marriage gives rise to the question, “what next will governments legalize?’ (Baker, 2010). Scientifically there is very little detail known about the way children are raised and how their mentally adjust to their family environment. Gay marriages are not natural and the impacts they could have on the cognitive development of children could be devastating. There would also be transformation in the social values. Upon its legalization, more individuals would be motivated to engage in homosexual activity. Children will be exposed to this new trend which could misguide them into thinking this is a new and modern trait. This in turn will lead them to experimentation which could ruin their future perception of relationships. Studies show that gay marriages have lower divorces than straight marriages, however, this data can attributed to the fact that there are much less gay marriages and more restrictions hence those who choose to get married in the current society are less likely divorce. Another natural factor that exists in society is the fact that there are only two genders instead of five, as homosexuals claim. This shows that interactions were created specifically for these two opposite sexes (Fischer, n.p). Males and females possess different qualities both emotionally and physically. These qualities are essential in maintaining a stable home and qualities are passed onto each generation from the parents. A child in a same sex marriage is deprived from qualities from sex hence will not have a normal upbringing. The child himself might have identity disorders due to the structure of his or her family (Fischer, n.p). Quoting Hansen, “Two women may both ne good mothers, but neither can be a good father” (Fischer, n.p). These families also lack the complementary balance that exists in straight marriages. In addition, they lack the ability to relate to both sexes that they often pick up from their parents. Therefore, the combination of all these factors illustrates that gay marriages have no place in modern day society. Defying natural aspects of marriage, which are one man and one woman makes it impossible to regulate other aspects. If gay marriage is permitted, it would be discriminatory to ban polygamy and marrying minors. Gay marriages are an abomination and have no place in a civilized society. Works Cited Baker, Brittney.
