Memories of Mother - Essay Example

On one of those dull, gloomy days when I sit down with a heavy heart the one person who comes to my mind is my mother. I remember how she has been through thick and thin all along my life. I am indebted to her for believing in me and encouraging me all along even during times when I did not treat her well. She bore me when I used to become angry and treat her rudely during my teenage years. I used to ignore her presence and figure out ways to avoid her company simply because I never seemed to understand her advice. She used to ask me to stay away from some of my teenage friends since they were engaged in suspicious and immoral activities which would hurt me eventually. These suggestions used to appear awkward to me and I used to regard them as useless and boring. I never paid heed to her advice and continued hanging out with my friends whom I used to trust more than my mother. Then one fine day everything changed; my views about her changed and my heart got sunk into a state of regret.

It was a chilled, stormy day and apparently the last day of our school. Everyone was excited about the party at night and there were celebrations all over our school. However, the weather gradually started getting worse and most of the people I knew canceled their plans for the night. I got several calls from my mom as she was worried as to when I would get back home. The sky grew darker and was overshadowed by clouds. Lightning struck and it started raining in no time. Since I was with my high school friends, I did not find it appropriate to attend to my mother’s phone calls simply because I was worried about what my friends would think of me. I tried to ignore the calls by not attending to them but soon my friends found out that my mom had been calling. Never had I felt as embarrassed as I did at that time. I switched off my phone and headed for the beach with my friends. The downpour was heavy and all the streets were choked with traffic. I started feeling scared and helpless as warnings were issued on the radio calling people to head towards their homes. The windscreen started losing clarity and the road ahead was barely visible. In a matter of seconds, our car got sidetracked, hit another car, and crashed into a pit. In a flash of time, the cops came and took us to the hospital. I had been unconscious all that time and when the first time I opened my eyes I saw my mother standing right in front of me with tears in her eyes. I did not know what to say; I was speechless. My heart filled with regret all of a sudden and I could not help but cry. I could not have eye contact with her because I was very ashamed of myself. Had I listened to her I would never have been here in the first place. All of this happened due to my negligence. She also handed me my phone which the cops had handed her after the accident. This reminded me of the time when I had switched it off because my friends seemed more important than her.

My heart sank when I got to know that two of my friends had died in that accident. I could have been one of them too. Never would I have gotten a chance to meet my mother again and apologize for my behavior if I had died just like them. The only reason why I was alive was because of my mother’s prayers. She had not stopped thinking about me from the moment I had left the house. For me, it was just a day out with friends but for her, it was about my safety on that stormy day. I could not stop thinking about how wrong I had been about her. Despite my rude behavior in the past with her, she brought little pancakes for me to eat that she had made herself.

This incident made me realize that only a mother knows what is best for her child. Mothers always want their children’s happiness and safety. They are gifted with patience to endure the toughest times from giving birth to the child to protecting him/her from all mishaps. Children who do not listen to their mothers are always at a loss just like me. I was not completely out of danger as I had one of my bones fractured. It was as if I had been punished for my ill behavior by someone who had loved me so much. Sometimes we just take things for granted until we lose them. Life does not always give us a chance to make up for our mistakes but I am glad I got one.
