Working At Yahoo Advances in technology, expanded capa and globalization together have made it essential that organizations must be flexible, fast and reliable if they are to survive (Robbins and Judge 16). Changing its policies, courses and working environments to cope up with the rapidly changing attitudes and demands of the workforce is something they should be able to deal with at any given time. It is the workforce that determines the success and behavior of an organization. In fact, every individual is an asset to an organization. It is the behavior, skill, mood and reliability of an individual which shapes up the workforce, which in turns shapes up the future of an organization. Cooperation, collaboration, team-work, motivation, communication, personality, work design and attitudes are what define and structure an organization (Robbins and Judge 2-3). Such key skills are important for every individual to have if a healthy, successful and progressing working environment is to be achieved. Furthermore, the level of comfort zone of a person mostly caters his/her ability to work to the full level of their capacity and mindset, owing to greater quality and productivity of work. A difficult, reserved, boring and complex environment can cause ineffectiveness and decline in quality and productivity of an organization. It is thereby crucial and most significant that a healthy, flexible and tension free environment is provided to safeguard an organization’s interests and objectives, which for most individuals are their homes. Organizational Behavior It is important and significant for an organization to know the attitude, personality, skill and mindset of the people shaping up the structure of their organization. Thus, it is important to learn and create an innovating, flexible, reliable and tension free organizational behavior so to ensure full working capacity, quality and productivity of the individuals working there. According to the scientific study of organizational behavior, it deals with the impact and influence of that individuals, groups and organizational structure have on the working and behavior within an organization (Robbins and Judge 11). The key concept behind organizational behavior is the study of employment- related issues, behaviors and concerns to increase the effectiveness and productivity of an organization. Factors affecting organizational behavior and productivity There are some factors, which cater the organizational behavior of an organization. The factors discussed are those which immensely highlight the working force’s dimension with progress and success of an organization and include work environment, work-life conflicts, catering innovation and change, quality and productivity, workforce diversity etc. An organization must look forward to provide flexible and achievable targets to their employees, rather than getting them stressed by demanding the impossible. Catering innovation and change with interesting projects tends to bring in full participation of the work force. It is crucial to keep in mind that the comfort zone of every employee differs to an extent to their mental capability. However, it is likely seen that majority of people don’t favor working from 9-5pm. Remote working- today’s most suitable organizational behavior Growing to 20% of the working population in 2012, remote working has largely been adopted by employees and employers as a beneficial source of workforce or job. Home based jobs which allow you to accommodate your job to your own flexibility are termed as remote working. It is the product of the advancement in globalization and technology. Apart from being beneficial, it also caters to provide optimum organizational behavior which is important for quality, productivity and success of an organization. Remote working provides employees to work in their comfort zone. The employee is free to adjust his/her flexibility to the work given by synchronizing their own timing, mood and resources. Especially, single parents are able to do their chores, look after their families and work from home at the same time without worrying to pay-extra to the baby sitter or miss out on a doctor’s appointment. Remote working also allows an employee to work easily and more efficiently and his energy is also not wasted. According to John Sullivan, “If you want productivity, then you want people working from home”. As a matter of fact, employees when working from home often work for longer hours than hours working in office. Flexible and calmer work environment produces quality and efficiency in work. People consider working from home a privilege and tend to take the job more seriously. Work politics or discrimination is less likely to be faced by an organization whose majority work force is remote employed. People meet less and so confrontation issues, discrimination and politics is less likely to grow relating to a progressive working environment. Also, coping with temporariness is one of the biggest issues of today’s organizational world and thus a need for flexible and motivational working environment is needed (Robbins and Judge 13). Organizations which have adopted remote working work force save a lot of money on real-estate. The company Atena saved up to $78 million in real state costs according to Susan Millerick. They also save on office furniture, electricity, utility bills and other costs. Policy and legal considerations in terms of tax and liabilities are also reduced. Organizations can have advantage of working with more diversified and skilled employees from overseas owing to work home policies. Even if the personal situations of a home based employee changes, the organization may still not lose him because of the flexibility of timings. Absenteeism or issues related to employees being late are not faced with organizations having remote workforce for they have flexible home based environment and timings. Yahoo- abolishing remote working? Since Google’s rapid fire profits have increased with the innovating launchings of Google Play and Google scholar, Yahoo has been facing a lot of competition. CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer has ordered every single Yahoo employee to work from office with the memo communicating that face to face interaction fosters a more collaborative culture which, according to her is a strategy of Google’s successful approach to business. Also the human resources director of Yahoo, Jackie Reses, is of the view that interaction at workplace fosters not only innovation, but better decision making. It also results in much less time wastage in comparison to home based work alongside better quality. Re-planning, innovation, re-designing and advancement are catered by interaction, group discussions, meetings and groupings. Policies, tasks and work environment are best engaged when people work together. For the company, Yahoo who is trying to adhere to the innovating globalization, this is the right move (Mendoza). However, innovation is not the only phenomena which regard the success of an organization. Flexible working opportunities, tension-free environment and employee satisfaction also are crucial and cannot be ignored. Disagreement Yahoo must trust its employees who have been working sincerely for a very long time. Successful working depends on trusting those people who work well irrespective of the fact that they’re being supervised or not. However, I believe the policy is also short-sighted as people who are spread out in other countries find it difficult to re-locate their families while firms resist paying extra for travelling, shifting and children education expenses. Furthermore, suitable tension free environment is what skilled people want. Yahoo may lose its top-performers according to its new policy. Morale engagement and employee satisfaction and flexibility must also be taken into consideration, and not just innovation (Rampell, Miller and Catherine). Yahoo also needs to know that the staff that is unproductive will be non-productive anywhere regardless of the workplace. Yahoo is itself a tech company and it should preserve its foundational element and use its technology to adhere to globalization challenges and take feedbacks to further improve and enhance the work place environment. Without use, no objections will be discovered. Thus, yahoo must put into use teleconferencing and video-calling to have group discussions and meetings, if required or needed, in terms of collaboration. Why I need remote working? In this period of inflation, my large family acquires proper financial support. I work on two consecutive jobs from home. I am very budget conscious because I have to run a large family, therefore working from home saves my fuel charges, car maintenance cost and my energy. Also, I can be free of dress rule which can add up to my savings of dresses and ironing. I also have my parents living with me, and being their only son it is my duty to look after them at this old age and it is possible only when I work from home. I can easily perform chores and fulfill utility requirements like paying of bills and shopping because of the flexibility of work timings I have. Furthermore, I can stay more focused on my task by being away from rumor mills, politics and distractions of a typical workplace. The tension free and calm work environment at home makes it feasible for me to work more effectively and efficiently.
