Things which are Important in Our Lives Things are important in our lives. Things make our lives more comfortable. It also enables us to do a lot of things which otherwise would have been difficult to do without those things. Things can also entertain us. Things also remind us of important events in our lives. Many may have caution that things could make us materialistic but they are in fact good when they are used properly. Things make our lives more comfortable. In a way, things smoothens the rough edges of our lives to make them more convenient that life would be unimaginable without them. The ways that things make our lives more comfortable are countless. From the moment we wake up until we sleep, things are there make our lives easier. We sleep on a thing called bed and wakes up with the alarm of another thing called alarm clock. Our breakfast would not have been prepared if not the convenience of cooking things in the kitchen. When we prepare ourselves either for school or work, things are again present for us. We dress ourselves in clothes appropriate for us and go to school or work in another form of thing which is a car. Even our place of work school is filled with things. In school, computers make studying easier especially the internet. Our daily lives are basically filled with things to make it convenient for us. Things also enables us to do a lot of things which otherwise would have been difficult to do without those things. I can concretely cite the example of a computer and internet without which studying and doing research would have been very difficult. If I have to do a term paper, I will have to physically go to the library and scour through the catalogues before finding the books and magazine that I need for research. After finding those materials that I need, I have to borrow them physically or copy the text if I am not allowed to bring the books at home. I would have to laboriously go all through them which will take a lot of time and effort. And even writing the report would require a great deal of effort because I have to manually type them. The thing called computer and internet releases me from those burden and allow me to study better. I can scour through books and journals and other articles right in the comfort of my home. This is faster and more convenient. The information I can find using the computer and internet in minutes may take me hours if I will do it physically in the library. Writing the paper itself is also easier and more efficient because I can do it in my computer and edit it before printing. I can even submit it online saving me paper. In other words, things are therefore enabler because it allows us to be more productive and become a useful member of society. Things can also entertain us. The advances in technology made things capable to do a lot of entertaining stuff. The entertainment that things give us comes in the form of video games, movies and gadgets which made more engaging than before. The video games today are so realistic that they can already mimic real life. The movies are already in high definition and three dimensional that the scenes played almost pops out of the screen. Things indeed can make our lives more fun. Things also remind us of important events in our lives. The “stuffs” or things we collect remind us of special people or unforgettable events in our lives. These things may not mean anything to other people but they symbolically represent meanings and memories which are uniquely peculiar to us. These things makes us better sons and daughters, better parents, better wife and husband, better friends and better human beings. These things reacquaint us with this people and events and in turn make us more human. Many people caution about the possession of things that it could make us materialistic and become a slave to it. They could be right and they could also be wrong. They could either be right or wrong because things are actually value neutral. Value neutral meant that things are neither good nor bad. The value of things depends on how it is used. Things can become good if it is used for a good reason/cause and it could also become bad if it is used for a bad reason or cause. Just like fire, it can be good when we can harness and control it as it provides us warmth and cooks our food but it can also burn our house and kill us if we use it wantonly. If we also depend so much on the things that we have thinking that it can make us happy, then that is the time that things becomes bad that it made us materialistic. It is because we are going to want more and more until we cannot have enough. But if we treat things as mere tools to make our lives more comfortable, and to make us do more, and to remind us of special people and events, then things are good. In sum, things make our lives convenient. It also makes us to do more and become more productive member in society. Things can also make us more human because they can represent special people and events in our lives. With regard to the concern that things may make us materialistic, the question actually depends on us. If we attached our value or happiness to things, then that is the time that we became a slave to it or became materialistic. But if we treat things as what they are, as mere tools and implements that are to be used in our lives, then things could be good. We have to remember that anything excess in life is not good and that includes our dependency on things. Using things is good but depending on them too much is bad.
