This paper seeks to establish the effects of social media and instant communication as obstacles to reflection and effective thinking. This will be in reference to the values and virtues at the Loyola Marymount University as addressed by Fr. Adolfo’ address. The missions and values of Loyola Marymount however have been based on effective thinking and reflection from a personal perspective.
Man is a social being. The desire to get information and equally spread it has become the normal phenomenon. On the other hand, this socialization has been made even easier by the hyper-connected fast paced world and this has been made possible by the spread of the internet data connection to every mobile phone and in some countries, the homesteads. It is therefore not uncommon to see people glued to their phones when in office, class, travelling and even eating. This, as far as the mission and principles of Loyola are concerned is tantamount to developing a lazy society in terms of thinking and reflection. Turkle (2011) claims that the society would be made up of better thinkers (like it was in the ancient periods) if we did away with this technology. He notes that the likes of Isaac Newton discovered gravity by use of their minds and the experimental world than any technology. In fact, discoveries have gone low compared to the ancient periods. Internet has encouraged reading and thinking that is superficial. When someone can Google anything he wants, where is the time to think and contemplate anything? Moreover, social media platforms like the Facebook and twitter is said to spawn conversations that are very shallow and dwells on inanities. This idea is however disputed by Shirky (2011) who asserts that the connection helps people connect and therefore those who are not able to think independently are helped to think by others.
