Extract of sample "Ethics in Qualitative Research"

In the terms of ontology, the notion of interconnection describes the dependency of the objects of the system in the real world, but the terms are correspondingly the descriptors of the real objects (Dresser, 1998 ). Sample selection ( Please add and omit as required) The samples for the study will be drawn from one acute hospital and one intermediate care setting. The patients will need to share their experiential information regarding their hospital and intermediate care stay. The sample size will be 5 from 8 forms each setting, a selection will be done through purposive sampling.

The diagnosis of dementia will be excluded due to consent issues. Method ( Please add and omit as needed and reference) The method of survey via interview will chosen as the method. The interview will address many facets of the process. It will be used for gathering information about the persons’ knowledge, values and preferences and attitudes that will enable the researcher to test the hypothesis. Semi structured interviews, which include non standardised open and closed questions will be used by the researcher.

The interview will be pre-planned and conducted face to face. By this technique, they will try to elicit a more detailed response from the subject. Procedure( Please add and omit as required) The researcher will administer the interviews guided by the questions, which will reflect the objectives of the study. There will be a fellow therapist present to scribe and recode the interview via a tape recorder to ensure all responses are recorded and interpreted correctly. The interviews will take place in the hospital treatment rooms, which will be pre-booked to avoid any disturbances.

The demographic information will be ascertained from patient/SU records prior to the interview. Written permission to conduct the study will be gained from the hospital and the respective intermediate care setting. Ethics ( Please add and reference as needed) Forecasting the moral issues, which occur on all the stages of the research, the researcher can make choice at the stage of the research planning and pay attention to critical issues, which can occur during the interrogation. Ethical code and theories seldom provide definite answers to the questions concerning correct choices, which should be made in the process of investigation.

They look like as texts to interpret and not the rules to follow: they provide the scheme or principles, which are subject to evaluation due to their appropriateness in this concrete situation. During the preparation of the plan for the whole research, it is useful to make the scratch of ethical protocol, which will reflect ethical problems, forecasted during the research. 5 major concerns in qualitative research are: “autonomy, implications for researchers, beneficence, justice, reliability” (Orb, 2000).

Data Analysis ( Please add and omit as required) Qualitative method for analysing interviews will be used. The interviews will be analysed in forms of keywords, phrases, sentences, and opinions. Aiming to elicit concepts relating to the objectives. Coding will be used. The point would capture key themes and create categories, which would enable the researcher to reflect on the purpose of the research. This process will be repeated for all interview data and finally, the researcher will plan to describe a connection between the data.

Questionnaire: ( Please amend as needed to address the objectives) 1)how can you describe your experience in the hospital? 2)Do you have a named key worker assigned to your care? 3)Were all hospital procedures related to your care/medical condition explained to you? 4)Do the hospital staff address your anxieties and concerns? 4) Are you feeling physically better and can you explain why? Are you given regular updates about your recovery? Are you aware of your discharge plans and date? Have your family or NOK been involved in your care?
