I have learned communication skills that have not only improved my pronunciation but also enhanced my good command in speaking English.
I took English 105 as a unit in the university and one of the objectives required is to be able to attain good writing skills. The course entails the use of four topics in learning English, which include; Media review, Observation, Contact zone, and banking of concept education.

An improvement of the overall quality of work entails a summary that is not only clear and precise but also gives an overview or tries to analyze a wider point of what the topic elaborates. This skill was enhanced through a review of a movie about Chinese history, especially about the last Emperor. The movie shows how the last king Pu Yi could not rule the empire as the forerunners did and ended up lonely in the Forbidden City. The review of this story enabled me to test my recollection ability of what I watched and how easily I can remember an event that occurred. It also enabled me to be creative in writing a story. The major corrections done here mostly were on punctuation, sentence construction, and general flow of ideas to make the story flow chronologically.

Observation is a skill that is of greater importance to a writer or student. An essay written about the Miami children’s hospital describes how the observer was involved in noting the behavior of the patient’s parent, nurse, and the child who was a patient. The writer describes the scenario as it is. This skill of describing a behavior requires a detailed analysis of a specific event without generalization. The details described make it provable by the presenter.

My third essay majored in contact with the situation or community around this enabled understand of myself the community I interacted with an exemplary way of revealing yourself is by writing about how you became aware of something, how to gain a way of the new world, and new insight. The issue of discrimination against international students by USA students was a personal experience due to language barriers or race. The difference in cultures between Chinese and other nations especially the USA encouraged me to link the two together thus it somehow caused a thrilling encounter for readers or an intrigue. It enhanced my discovery of values and examination of motives.
Writing skills learned
The various writing skills that I have learned so far include;

1. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Most of the readers form opinions about a writer on the content and presentation of the work. A negative impression is formed by the reader towards the writer because of poor punctuation, grammar, as well as spelling mistakes observed in the work. I was able to learn the skills by re-reading my work before sending the final copy. I always give a friend to proofread my work before presenting. This is because a reader can notice a slight mistake that might pass unseen. These mistakes sometimes occur due to the different speeds of operation of both brain and hands.

2. Writing style especially the MLA style writing

The knowledge gained from the Standard MLA formatting enables me to cite correctly a book, or journal, and even how to quote somebody’s words. This helps me a lot to void plagiarism.
3. Clarification of ideas and making the work in a logical order
Conveying an idea to the reader is key to making them understand your message. This is only through making your points clear and organizing of work that makes it flows. The course also enabled me to be able to identify key points, themes, and facts that should be addressed when writing an essay or review. Ambiguity can also be minimized through short and clear sentences as well as paragraphs.

In conclusion, initially before starting my English 105 classes, I was unable to construct a topic sentence or essay statement, and even connect the topic sentence to the essay statement. There is now a big difference since I can now write an essay as a whole with good topic statements, which are well connected to essay statements as well as summaries of such. In a nutshell, I now know what is entailed in thesis writing and I’m able to write it with ease. I am proud and appreciate the instructors who have enabled me to learn the English language as well as essay and thesis writing.
