Her real involvement with nursing profession began in 1844. While spending her time in Egypt during 1849-50, she could realize that the nursing profession needed some disciplined approach. During the month of July and August in 1850, Nightingale visited the Institute of Protestant Deaconesses at Kaiserswerth. The institute was known for its training to groom teachers and nurses. That was precisely here where she got convinced that women can adopt nursing as a profession. After returning from there, she continued making visits to hospitals at London; she also visited hospitals in Dublin and Edinburgh. Finally, in 1853, she agreed to accept the post of superintendent in a hospital in Harley Street (Bloy, 2012). Audain (2014) conveys, “Nightingale was an innovator in the collection, tabulation, interpretation and graphical display of descriptive statistics.” She effectively used her knowledge of mathematics in improving medical and surgical practices (Audain, 2014).

Her real work came to be known in 1854 when the Crimean War broke out. England had deployed its army in that war in Turkey. Many British soldiers were getting wounded in the war and due to lack of treatment facilities, many of them were dying. Florence Nightingale showed her eagerness to visit the military hospital in Turkey. She was then leading the troop of 38 women to take over the job of nursing in Turkey. Sidney Herbert, the Secretary for War, granted her complete authority to establish a rescue mission with no dearth of resources for this important endeavor.
