An example of a vital skill set is the development of professional communication skills applicable in organizational settings. Professional communication skills, especially strategic, leadership, and organizational communication help individuals to develop competence in communication in their areas of expertise (Birkinshaw, 10). Most individuals who take up Master’ degree classes in Communication are professionals seeking to enhance their knowledge in communication beyond basic communication.

Aside from training students on essential communication skills, the institution works to instill a passion for theoretical and intellectual discovery that goes beyond the expectations of the course and the career objectives of students. The UCCS encourages students to undertake their research into communication as a discipline. This research is supplementary to the lessons learned in class that are ascribed to communication such as essential skills of effective communication and the application of these skills to different relevant settings (McKay & Martha, 79).

According to the program’s homepage, the expectation upon graduation is that every student will possess an advanced and broad-based understanding and knowledge of the processes of communication and the theories concerning organizational communication relevant to the student’s area of interest. This is important, because, in any career, communication is imperative to performing well (Birkinshaw, 18). Knowledge and understanding of organizational communication enable a professional to relate well with his or her colleagues at the workplace. Issues such as the effective delivery of instructions espouse satisfactory performance, which leads to effectiveness in undertaking duties (Worth, 40).

The program also intends to equip every student with communication skills. Communication skills entail the analysis of contexts and critical thinking. Regarding critical thinking, students are taught to process information before acting on it, therefore ensuring that the right thing is done to complete tasks in a professional setting (Worth, 44). In addition to that, students are expected to possess skills in writing and speaking at the end of the course. Different professional settings require different writing and speaking skills. The language used for every setting differs. Possession of skills in speech enables individuals to communicate clearly and with precision.

The clarity in speech ensures that the main subject of interest is delivered to the recipient. Further, clarity enables a person to convey precise instructions, thus saving time, therefore providing ground for the timely completion of tasks. Equipping students with communication skills prepare them for success as they pursue further studies, including pursuing a doctoral degree program (McKay & Martha, 113).

The program web page also communicates the desire to create motivation and awareness among students by the use of their acquired knowledge and skills in communication about critical matters like inclusiveness and ethics. In a technologically mediated and diverse environment, the use of these skills will facilitate effectiveness in communication. Technology has provided more media for communication. Most organizations have embraced technology as a tool for communication (Birkinshaw, 30).

The new media for communication include emails, social networking sites along with video conferencing. The new media facilitate real-time communication between individuals and organizations that are far apart from each other. In that case, the programs train students on the use of such media in communication to facilitate success (Worth, 46). By taking the communication course students also acquire proficiency in conducting and designing a research study on communication-based on their respective areas of interest. The importance of taking a master’s degree in communication, as highlighted, is important in the development of an individual’s career (McKay & Martha, 113). Read More
