The study involved 508 adolescent psychiatric patients that were being treated from 2001 to 2006.

Ikaheimo, Laukkanen and Hakko also conducted an interview which found that children from single-parent families, children on welfare, and adopted children had high risk of committing crime. The result of the study also argued that lack of a stable family and a good childhood environment has important effects on adolescents and contribute to the health problem such as mental disorders and loneliness. They used questionnaires to collect data in different schools and found that adolescent living or brought up in dysfunctional or non-intact families are more likely to engage in delinquency and also engage in the abuse of alcohol. Moreover, Vanassche, Sodermans and Matthijs found that high delinquent behaviour is exhibited in families that have single parents and girls raised by stepmothers or stepfathers.
