The changes in water temperature have resulted in a reduction in the growth of phytoplankton, which is the main source of nutrients for fish. Both predator and prey are forced to travel long distances in search of food. The vagaries of global weather result in some species falling victims, while others prosper under the changing environmental conditions (Mecklenburg, Mecklenburg, and Thorsteinson 537). Sites of fish jumping from the water on the itineraries through these places are relatively common.

While some of the fish are in transit to different locations looking for food, others commonly leap out of the water in order to feed on terrestrial insects flying above. Whether a leap or a jump by the fish, they always appear to be flying when one sees them during a cruise. The reasons behind this observation might be unknown, but the element of flying fish remains a reality in the North West Pacific and Alaska.
