Intercollegiate athletic has undergone gradual evolution among colleges in the United States over the past 25 years. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) that plays a key role in the educational sector did the organization of athletic activities in institutions. Intercollegiate athletic Dramatic changes were necessary in the upgrading playing fields in universities and change perception among students, encouraging many to participate in athletic activities mostly female students. Traditionally, sports were a man’s thing with few women taking part in athletic activities. The participation of gaming at colleges has lead to formation of national teams taking part in Olympics, tournaments and creation of professional leagues. The paper dwells on the discussion on changes that has taken place in the intercollegiate athletic. Introduction of athletic scholarship among universities has seen many students discover and nurture their talents besides seeking education. The opportunity has improved sports activities among students, encouraging more female scholars to take up athletic practices. Errianne & Zullo (2014) estimates that 78 percent of athletics in universities enroll on scholarship from research done in Penn State. School sports help in achieving education mission as team such as basketball, hockey development innovative programs that aid in instilling discipline and hard work among scholars. Provision of incentives to athletics and distribution of funds to institutions belonging to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has resulted into the commercialization of sporting activities (Jozsa, F. (2012). Lavish spending is among the main problems facing college sports because many universities pour large amount of money on equipments and facilities in order to produce excellent players in soccer, basketball forgetting to adhere to the institution’s budget. Failure to plan sports’ events has seen colleges run in sports deficit because funds are to cater for scholarship as well as support sporting, forcing the state and donor to offset the debts even worse use fee levied from all students. In the recent past, athletic achievement has been recognized in the job market thus creating opportunity for the participants rather than dwell on academics performance alone. The experience both educational and athletic earned during the tenure is essential in the everyday life. During training and competition, athletics gain essential values such as teamwork, leadership, standards, disciplined and self-sacrifice that is necessary in the accomplishment of sports activity. The transfer of the critical values to any workplace, excellent performance is achieved. Sporting is very important to students, as it holds them in schools, reducing chances to engage into smoking, drinking and engaging in risky behaviors that may result into the dropping out of the education system. The commercialization of sports has lead to the increase of institutions involvement in athletic activities. Stiff competition and desire to be the best playing team has resulted into formulation of tournaments. Publicity occurs when airing sports event on television and the best intercollegiate institution with similar performance in academics increases its enrollment. Members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) are able to centralize their resources in turn generating money to the institution and individual students. Scholars participating in sports are on high demand and hiring them to sporting clubs increases revenues that in turn improves the economic status of their school. The demand to reform from the sporting activities in the past decade has lead to the introduction of the amateur model. During schooling, appreciation of athletes for their services but the institution to train and model the trainee hires educators. Priority accorded to the student-athletic welfare as it important to develop a viable, quality and marketable product without compromising with the standard. Monetary motivation and support given to institutions encourages enrollment of more students and offer necessary trainings in sporting. Implementation of policy in governing school sports and expansion of athletics departments helping in the decision making as well create opportunities for sporting activities. According to Comeaux (2015), the sport’s president implements the institution structure in a manner to accommodate and nurture each student’s interests and abilities in sports with equal opportunities in the academics. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) requires each institution offering higher education to display on board their history and current athletic exercises taking place. Institutions that comply with set sport’s standards as well as other standards of academic performance receive awards and financial assistance. Students participating in sport activities stand to benefit such as academic tutoring, coaching, housing, medical cover and support services among others. The healthy competition among committed universities has lead into excellent performance in academics as well as numerous successes in sports. Sport directors from various institutions have introduced a couple of awards to acknowledge colleges with a broad-based performance. Institutions with high number of sports, ranging from basketball, baseball, diving, swimming, golf, cross-country, soccer, tennis, water polo among others stand a higher chance in the participation of a championship bracket. The size of championship bracket helps in determination and selection of teams and coaches’ representing the member institution in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) league. Increase of participation in the athletic is yet another key element that has undergone evolution in intercollegiate sporting activities. Implementation of motivating tools such as Title IX, has seen female students take up sporting in huge numbers than in the past (Comeaux, 2015). The effect of the rapid changes since the formulation of rules in sports has resulted in girls playing games that were traditionally men’s sports such as basketball. Female stars have captured serious Olympic medals propelling their way to positions such as premier women’s soccer programs. Development of professional leagues has encouraged scholars within the employment sector participate in athletic activity at the same time advancing their career. Friendly coaching and training not necessary for competition purposes is necessary in talent discovery. The achievement, fame and the kind of lavish lifestyle most athletics enjoy, has seen many parents and tutors encourage students to take up sporting activities. The gradual changes in interscholastic sports are complex for advances at the same rate as the civilization of man and technology. References Errianne, W. & Zullo, R. (2014) .
