Listening to music Introduction Music can be perceived differently, especially when it comes to songs of the same composition. This is seen in the harmony of the music. This is a radical change that an attentive audience can notice and tell the difference between the two performances of the same composition. Harmonization of a song can be noticed because of the notes` sounds, the cords and the tones by the singers. The melodic lines in the songs can distinguish the harmony of the songs. In the song “Cups” it is evident that harmony in the two pieces differs and varies with the tones. How the melodic lines interweave in the songs differs too (Vazsonyi, 15). Another important aspect of the assessment is the melody; the melody range of the two songs can differ with the timbers, and the rhymes. This can also be noticed by the audiences. “Cups” two song versions differ in rhyme and timbers as well. The differences in the melody can be relatively minor, but play a role in the differences of the two songs. The parallel transpose and the simple transpose can be noted too in the two pieces when they are performed (Vazsonyi, 15). The mood in the song can be noticed by the audience, this depends also on alterations that are made on the two pieces when done. These alterations can be done in the melody that is in the rhymes or the timbers of the song “cups” the melody of the original can be intact compared to the song sung again. Harmony can also affect the differences monitored by the audiences in the tone and notes. Another aspectual difference that can be noticed by the audience is the randomness, stochastic and chance. Randomness can be different based on how the singer wants it to appear. The first instance can be unintentional randomness, which can contribute to bad music this can be due to the guitarist or any other person adding extra notes to the music the second instance is the intended randomness, this can be done to improve the quality of the music by the singer. The intention is to introduce random variations that make the singing particular by varying the music content this can also be noticed in the two “Cups” pieces. The elements of randomness can be based on chance; this is brought out by the singer waiting for the opportune moment to begin another melodic line or the moment that the drum mist plays an extra note. Stochastic composition is noted in the cups song`s beats, which are very randomly thought and extraordinarily done. This brings out the element of the musics beauty in random thoughts that the composer uses to show random thoughts can be an important element in song composition. The choices made to the beat of the music, though random, are well thought of and well decidedly used in the two pieces (Vazsonyi, 67). The percussion and the rhyme of the beat can be noticed by the audience based on the tempo of the beat, and how it matches with the rhyme of the song. In the song “Cups” the rhyme of the beat was introduced and accompanied by the theme of randomness giving room for the melodic line to follow this breaks the monotony of the song. The listener can pin point the moods in the two “Cups” songs and this can be determined by the themes in the two pieces and how the singer brings out the themes. The listener is then the determinant of what theme he or she thinks the composer had in mind. The difference can be in the melody depending on whether it is ascending or descending. Changes can also be done in the rhythmic alteration to elongate the melody note, and this can be the difference between the two pieces (Kavanaugh, 38). A listener can tell the difference between two pieces by the voicing and the notes that have been removed or added. This is additional in defining the difference between the two piece`s mood. The pitch can pose as a difference to the listener, because different musicians use different pitches to sing. Different listeners can have different opinions after listening to the same song, but two different pieces. Some will think that the one piece was right and the other did not sound right while others will think that the pieces just sound the same or will like the piece that the other listener did not like and hating the piece the first listener liked. What matters is how did the songs sound and what the listener likes in music this can tell of whether the music is what he or she likes in the case of the “Cups” song the listener can like the beginning and approve of it. However, on listening the second versions which has alterations like the accapella version he or she might dislike it, on the contrary, he or she can dislike the original version and prefer the accapella version. Randomness is an important element for the approval of music by its listeners as most listeners can come to an agreement when it comes to the random idea in the beat of the song “Cups”, even though it is different in the intonation and all, but the beat remains the same, then the listeners can approve the beat to be interactive, random and intriguing. A listener’s reaction can show whether the music is good or not without bringing in the element of professional controversy of whether the music is good or not. A mediated musical version can be liked by a listener because it does not have any imperfections and there are no additives in the notes being played while another may not approve of it and say that the mediated music is not good because it does not sound human to him or her (Hewitt, 54). Those of this preference are the type that prefers the music to have a taste of naturalness and originality of the voices of the singers without the help of a computer. A common language from different listeners shows that the music could be good just as the listeners prefer it to be. I think that the “Cups” song was lovely from the word go and the creativity involved with the beat and how it rhymes with the singers, the pauses and how they are fitted into the song. The other pieces were still lovely as the element of randomness is put into use; this brings out the element that makes music better and more natural without mediation of the computer (Hewitt, 54). The “Cups” song has the effect of common language to its listeners which is summarized by one word beautiful. The melody, themes and the moods were chosen well and the composition was attractive with considerations for both the composer and the listener. These two elements satisfy both the writer`s approval and the listener`s approval of the music production whether mediated or not.
