This essay aims to address the following concerns: how is health promotion defined?, what is the purpose of health promotion in nursing practice?, how are nursing roles and responsibilities evolving in health promotion?, how do nurses in all areas of nursing implement health promotion? And also compare the three levels of health promotion prevention. It is stated that the purpose of health promotion is encompassed in the definition provided by Maben, which states that the purpose of health promotion is to increase awareness of those patients being addressed and taken cared of by nurses in terms of improving the status of health with the ultimate goal of preventing illnesses. Likewise, the pertinent issues of health promotion are envisioned to be disseminated to all mentioned above to assist in coping with identified diseases. As indicated, the purpose is clearly to enhance awareness through educating and application interventions depending on the level of health promotion. The three levels of health promotion are: primary, secondary, and tertiary health promotions, specifically defined as follows: primary health promotion is focused with the prevention of new cases of injury or illness, secondary health promotion assumes that an injury or illness has already emerged and the nurses aims to minimize deterioration and tertiary health promotion needs application of identified interventions in cases of the onset of chronic disease and finally, to actively assist in efforts to rehabilitate chronic health status of patients. ...

Health promotion and nursing practice The World Health Organization has defined health promotion as “the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health” (Nutbeam, 1998, p. 1). This implies that the participation of individuals is important in determining their health, and that health providers are not solely burdened to keep individuals healthy.

It is used for different types of diseases, especially communicable ones which tend to spread unprecedentedly. In this paper, three articles covering the three different levels of health promotion – primary, secondary and tertiary – were reviewed so as to determine how health promotion has helped prevent and control diseases.
Health in this context not only refers to the traditional, objective and biomedical view of the absence of infirmity or disease but to a holistic view that adds mental resources and social well-being to physical health. Health promotion goes beyond health education and disease prevention in reference to the concept of salutogenesis and stresses the analysis and development of the health potential of individuals (William, 2010).
Health promotion is therefore the advocacy, popularization and an endless responsibility of health providers for the general welfare of their constituents or clienteles. O’Donnell (2009) explicated that health promotion is both a science and an art about engaging people to optimize health standards to attain balance of physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual health.
The WHO definition states that health promotion is the ‘process of enabling people to increase control and improve their life along with optimizing their quality of life’ (Pender, Murdaugh and Parsons, 2011). In other words, the approach is used to enhance a sense of health and reduces prevalence of illness that can happen to individuals at any given point in time.
