Introduction The study "Effectiveness of Two Cushions in the Prevention of Heel Pressure Ulcers" intends to determine if the rate of effectiveness in utilizing two cushions for the geriatric population as a means to prevent heal pressure ulcers. The introduction of the study delved on the key problem prevalent in the nursing practice, which are heel pressure ulcers…

Introduction

At the beginning of the introduction, the researchers presented the facts as to why conducting a study about heel pressure ulcers was important. It is considered as a common problem in clinical practice and is deemed burdensome on both human and financial terms. The manifestation of heel pressure ulcers affect the patient both physically and mentally, inclusive of the fact that it adds to the expenses in clinical treatment. Thus, the researchers chose to assess two different cushions in terms of effectiveness in preventing heel pressure ulcers (Braden and Blanchard, 2007). The study has also defined what pressure ulcers are, including the means on how it can be prevented. In general, these measures are to reduce the duration or reduce the magnitude of pressure and shearing forces. In that regard, the researchers analyzed that the reduction of the duration of shear and pressure can be carried out through repositioning the patient or through the use of alternating pressure air mattresses (Heyneman, et. al, 2009). Since both variables can be reduced through the utilization of a tool that would increased the contact surface of the patient with the underlying support surface. The researchers then elaborated on the products with varying pressure reducing capacity in terms of effectiveness. ...

Evidence for Practice Innovation. Evidence-Based Nursing.
Due to the fact that evidence in nursing practice is a recent idea, it has not been embraced by many nurses. In fact only about 15% of the nurses in practice work within the requirements of evidence based practice. This small percentage is quite devastating since this concept has been well explained and its significance documented . This figure also shows the negative attitude that is present…
Frequent Repositioning May not always be Effective to Prevent Pressure Ulcer
According to the study of Rich et al. (2011), pressure ulcers account for an average cost of more than $15,000 for excess hospital cost with charges associated to hospital stays (p. 11). Longer hospital stays and costs, as well as the substantial pain and suffering on the part of the patient can be reduced if focus will be given on preventing pressure ulcers. Frantz, Tang & Titler (2004) stated in…

323). Data were collected from 85 patients with diabetic ulcers but due to attrition, only 54 patients were analyzed. The result of the study found out that a statistically significant difference (p<0.001) between the gauze and bioactive dressing groups exist as for the number of healed pressure ulcers (p<0.05), indicating that the use of a moist bioactive wound dressing increased the healing rate…

Pressure Ulcers
Pressure ulcers are damages to the skin and underlying tissue due to pressure, friction, shear or a combination of these factors. Support surfaces such as mattress overlays, replacement mattresses, pressure relieving beds, cushions, or repositioning patients manually are methods used to relieve pressure. Patients with limited mobility are provided with mattress overlays and replacement mattresses…
Management Skills in Adult Nursing
In order to improve my practice, I will reflect on this incident, and address issues of effective discharge planning, communication, and handover. The themes I will consider for this topic would follow the various questions raised by Johns’ reflective model. This model is meant to be implemented by sharing with fellow practitioners or with a mentor, which then transforms the learning to a faster…
Pressure ulcers: home based nursing
As a result, there is a large preference to treat the condition in a home setting to stay clear of the above negative impact of hospital settings. Another concept or fact underlying the study is that it was perceived and recorded as the primary cause of death for roughly 30 Australians in the year 2008 arousing further curiosity on its treatment and other issues (Kapp and Annells, 2010). In…
